Grants and Writing Resources for Shanghai Jiao Tong University
SJTU's Graduate School posted profiles of its 2025 Academic Stars (学术之星) in spring 2026, among them four winners and further graduate students named as nominees. The university's 2024 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations list shows where that work leads: one honored author, whose dissertation studied manufacturing servitization under supply-chain globalization, went on to an assistant professorship at Tilburg University. Outstanding dissertations may not exceed 1% of a year's doctoral graduates.
Graduate Funding
The Graduate School's scholarship and assistance overview sets out three layers of support. The National Grant (国家助学金) pays 6,000 RMB a year to master's students and 15,000 RMB to doctoral students. The Academic Scholarship (学业奖学金) pays master's students 12,000 RMB at first class or 6,000 RMB at second class, and doctoral students 12,000 RMB once they pass the qualifying exam.
Every doctoral student also holds a teaching, administrative or research assistantship paying at least 3,060 RMB a month. Taken together, the page puts a doctoral student's minimum support at 57,600 RMB a year after the qualifying exam. Current rules and notices sit under the Graduate School's Student Status and Awards section.
Academic Star Awards
Academic Star (学术之星) is SJTU's selection honoring graduate researchers, listed on the Graduate School site, and its eleventh round was announced in October 2026. Winners and nominees get published profiles. Reading a few of the 2025 profiles shows the kind of research that gets chosen.
Dissertation Honors
SJTU has chosen Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations every year since 2016. The cap is strict: selected and nominated dissertations together may not exceed 3% of that year's doctoral graduates, and outstanding dissertations alone may not exceed 1%. The 2024 list runs from thermoelectric materials and typhoon-triggered landslides to cancer immunology and supply-chain management, and it names each author's supervisor and next post.
