Grants and Writing Resources for Southeastern Louisiana University

Southeastern student journalists placed at the 2026 Southeast Journalism Conference, held that February at Georgia Highlands College in Cartersville, Georgia. Two Southeastern Channel student employees shared first place in the onsite Television Sports competition. In the Best of South awards, another student took third place in the research category.

Research Money for Regional Topics

The Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies pays students to research the region. The ELHA Student Research Scholarship began with an initial $12,000 donation from the Edward Livingston Historical Association. The 2025 award was paid in renewable $500 increments each semester. Undergraduates and graduate students may apply. Projects can take up almost any subject, as long as they center on southeast Louisiana, with an emphasis on Livingston Parish.

Two graduate research assistantships put students to work in the Center's archives, with a master's thesis or publishable paper as the goal. For the award that began in August 2025, the Cefalu assistantship (formally the Nicholas Cefalu Graduate Research Assistantship) covered full tuition for fall and spring, a full graduate stipend and a $1,500 enhancement each semester. The Young Sanders Center Graduate Research Assistantship for the same year covered tuition for fall, spring and summer and a $21,000 stipend paid in three installments. Graduate students in any field are eligible if their research concerns southeast Louisiana or the wider Gulf South.

Showing Work in the Library

The Office of Sponsored Research and Programs holds a Students' Research, Creative, and Scholarly Activities Showcase for undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines. The 2025 edition ran on April 15 in the lobby and mezzanine of Sims Memorial Library. Students could display conference posters, publications, visual art, robots and sculptures, and work from earlier semesters at Southeastern was welcome. The showcase is non-competitive. Presenters stay an hour or more to talk about their work, and The Document Source printed one free poster for each participant.

Where Student Work Appears

The Pick publishes papers that Southeastern graduate and undergraduate students first wrote for class assignments, in any discipline. The English Department and the Southeastern Writing Center publish it. Authors of conditionally accepted pieces meet with a Pick editor to revise, and Southeastern faculty then give the work a second review.

Creative writing and art go to The Manchac Review, the university's creative journal, published in print and online. Editors or instructors for each genre review the work, and submissions are accepted year round.

Tutoring and Thesis Format Review

The Southeastern Writing Center in D Vickers 2095 offers one-on-one tutoring in person and online, along with workshops and a speaker series. Graduate assistants and work-study students staff it. There is no charge beyond regular tuition fees.

Graduate writers follow the Office of Graduate Studies' thesis and dissertation standards, revised in February 2024. The advisory committee judges writing quality, and every thesis and dissertation must meet "the highest standards of English grammar and punctuation." The office then checks the complete PDF, with its signed approval page, against the manual and sends back a list of corrections where needed. After approval, the final version goes to ProQuest through Southeastern's ETD site.

Before a thesis goes in for format review, or a class paper goes to The Pick, our editors can give it a final edit for grammar, consistency and format.
