Grants and Writing Resources for St. Edward's University
In March 2026 the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program named St. Edward's a Top Producing Institution in the Small Colleges and Universities category. Since the program began in 2001, 91 St. Edward's students have earned Gilman scholarships for study or internships abroad. That spring, four Master of Science in Business Analytics students placed among the top 30 competitors at the National Collegiate Sports Analytics Championship in Nashville.
Where Students Present
SOURCE, the annual Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression, opens to any undergraduate with a faculty sponsor. Students submit a 250-word abstract in English or Spanish and choose a printed poster or a 12-minute talk followed by three minutes of questions. Faculty and staff judge. For the 25th symposium in 2026, the steering committee gave Best Poster and Best Oral Presentation awards for the first time.
Honors students present their senior theses at the Honors Symposium. Past projects range from academic research to graphic novels, plays and fashion designs, and the semester of preparatory research is often paid for through the Office of Fellowships.
Research Funding
Students accepted to present at an academic conference can apply to the Student Conference Travel Fund. Typical awards run $500 to $2,000 and cover registration, travel, lodging and meals. Recipients share the work on campus afterward, at SOURCE or in a campus journal.
The Martin Scholarship, endowed in 2017 by nearly 50 trustees, alumni and benefactors, pays for credential-building projects. Any student with a GPA of 3.2 or above and financial need may apply except graduating seniors, and Martin Scholars then work with the fellowships director on outside applications such as Fulbright and the Critical Language Scholarship. Students with a 3.7 GPA can seek a Summer Academic Excellence Award for research and travel. The McNair Scholars Program, at St. Edward's since 2003, prepares students for doctoral study with an eight-week summer research internship that includes a stipend and campus room and board.
Fellowships and Graduate Awards
The Office of Fellowships prepares students for the Marshall, Gates-Cambridge, Rhodes, Truman and Fulbright competitions. More than 80 Fulbrights have gone to St. Edward's students since 2004, and in 2023-2024 the university was the country's top producer of Fulbright U.S. students among master's-granting institutions. Its undergraduate funding list includes the Goldwater Scholarship, worth up to $7,500 a year for students headed into mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering.
Graduate students can apply for a summer research grant. The Toward a More Just World Award asks applicants to explain how a research project will help create a more just world. The Hook Fellowship funds undergraduate or graduate research and creative work at Wild Basin and other Balcones Canyonlands Preserve lands, with up to $5,000 for the student, $1,500 for supplies and a $1,500 mentor stipend.
Journals, the Writing Center and Dissertations
Areté, a student-run academic journal first published in 1991, takes research papers, essays and theses from every discipline. The Sorin Oak Review prints fiction, poetry and artwork each year, and Hilltop Views is the student newspaper published by the School of Humanities. All three are described on the Literature, Writing and Rhetoric page.
The Writing Center works with undergraduate and graduate students all year. Appointments are booked through Navigate360, and drafts submitted online come back with comments in 24 to 72 hours, weekends excluded.
Students in the EdD in Leadership and Higher Education write a practice-based dissertation on an issue of practice, with two Dissertation Writing Seminars and a final defense course built into the research sequence. The Munday Library Institutional Repository collects theses, dissertations, posters and conference papers by St. Edward's students and faculty; students submit by contacting the library.
Our editors check grammar, consistency and format on papers, capstones and dissertations before they reach a committee or a journal. See our St. Edward's University dissertation and thesis editing and St. Edward's University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
