Grants and Writing Resources for Syracuse University

Three members of Syracuse's class of 2027 won 2026 Goldwater Scholarships in April. Two are College of Arts and Sciences majors, in neuroscience and statistics and in geology, and the third studies biomedical engineering. One project maps geothermal heat beneath Greenland's ice sheet; another engineers bacteria-fighting surfaces for medical implants. The Goldwater Foundation selected 454 scholars from 1,485 nominations nationwide.

Money for an Honors Thesis

Students in the Renée Crown University Honors Program write a thesis in any major. A project proposal must be approved by the end of junior year, and seniors present the finished work at the program's annual presentation day.

Crown Thesis Funding pays up to $5,000 a project, for about 25 projects a year, and some summer lab projects add a $2,500 living stipend. The money covers materials, supplies and research travel. Conference costs qualify only when the student is presenting. The Parker Award for Women in Science funds one woman's science thesis each year. Honors reports that about 75 percent of its students receive funding.

Graduate Grants and Prizes

The Graduate School's SURE Dissertation Grant Program sets aside up to $30,000 a semester for doctoral research costs, with individual awards capped at $3,000. Grants pay for equipment, software, participant incentives and travel the research requires. Conference travel is covered elsewhere: the PAC Work Grant reimburses up to $600 for presenting a paper, poster or creative work, or up to $200 for attending, once per academic year.

Master's and doctoral students in every discipline can apply for the Graduate Dean's Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Work. Each winner receives $500 and gives a five-minute talk at the award symposium. The 2026 winners came from six schools and colleges, Newhouse, Maxwell and Visual and Performing Arts among them.

In the humanities, the Humanities Center awards two one-year Dissertation Fellowships to doctoral students finishing in English, philosophy, religion, or composition and cultural rhetoric. Fellows receive a stipend with benefits, some research funding and an office at the center.

Consultants and Copyeditors

The Writing Center in 101 H.B. Crouse Hall meets writers face to face, by video, or asynchronously with written comments on an uploaded draft. Consultants work on assignments, applications, presentations and poetry, and help students build editing and proofreading skills. SU students, faculty, staff and alumni can book, as can graduate students from ESF.

Graduate students have a second option. The Graduate Editing Service gives free sentence-level copyediting for clarity, grammar and tone on final drafts of dissertations, master's theses, articles, conference presentations and grant proposals. For a thesis or dissertation, the review period starts only once the advisor has given permission, and the service runs subject to editor capacity. Editors mark changes in Track Changes, and the student decides which to accept. Coursework and comprehensive exam answers are excluded.

Submitting the Thesis or Dissertation

The Graduate School's thesis and dissertation page links the format requirements, style guidelines and the electronic submittal checklist. Students upload a PDF of the advisor-approved final version to the ProQuest ETD site at no charge. An ETD administrator in the Graduate School reviews the file before it goes to ProQuest. At upload, authors can also choose open-access publication in SUrface, Syracuse's institutional repository.

Coursework, application essays and chapter drafts can come to our editors for a final edit of grammar, consistency and format. See our Syracuse University dissertation and thesis editing and Syracuse University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
