Grants and Writing Resources for Tarleton State University
Three students from Tarleton's Hypersonic and Satellite Sensing Laboratory took first place in the undergraduate team category at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Region IV Student Conference in Houston, a win the university reported in April 2026. Their paper described a laser communication link for hypersonic and re-entry vehicles that steers and corrects the beam with liquid crystal spatial light modulators and no moving parts. It came out of more than a year of research and testing. The win sends the team to the AIAA Foundation International Student Conference in January 2027.
Research Funding and Symposia
Tarleton's Division of Research, Innovation and Economic Development awards President's Excellence in Research Scholars grants, internal seed money for faculty-led student research. Twenty-seven faculty members held FY26 awards, and the students on those projects present posters at the RIED Research Symposium, which is open to undergraduate and graduate students with faculty-led projects. The 2026 symposium judged posters in three subject categories and ran a Three Minute Thesis competition.
The College of Science and Mathematics holds a separate Student Research Symposium. In August 2026 it drew more than 50 projects, and faculty judges scored each presenter on research content and on how clearly the findings were explained. Students with an interest in brain science can compete for the Pathway to Neuroscience Bridge Program, a summer of lab work at the Texas A&M Institute for Neuroscience. A grant covers room, board and a stipend.
A Journal and a Writing Prize
The Department of English and Languages released the first issue of the Bosque River Review in April 2026. Undergraduate editors choose the prose, poetry and visual art it prints, working with three faculty co-advisors, and the journal appears in print and online. Tarleton students and community members may submit.
The first issue in 2026 carried the William B. Martin Award for Writing Excellence, which went to one student and paid $500 with featured publication in the journal.
Graduate Scholarships and Fellowships
Master's students who complete the General Scholarships Application receive the President's Guaranteed Scholarship, a minimum of $250 to $1,000 a semester depending on credit hours. It renews with a 3.0 term GPA, and students can receive other scholarships alongside it. Graduate assistantships in teaching, laboratory instruction and research are offered in most departments with a master's program.
In March 2026 the Texas A&M System Research Excellence Fund gave Tarleton $500,000 for the SWIFT Doctoral Fellows Program. It funds ten fellowships in the Ph.D. programs in animal and natural resource sciences, experimental psychology and integrative biosciences, the last of these pending approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board when the award was announced. Faculty from other Texas A&M System institutions co-mentor the fellows.
Help With Writing and Theses
The University Writing Center in the O.A. Grant Humanities Building, Room 239, is free to undergraduates, graduate students and faculty in every discipline. Sessions are in person or on Zoom, booked through EAB Navigate. Evening drop-in hours at Dick Smith Library need no appointment, and students can email a Word file with the assignment details to the Online Tutorial Service.
A master's thesis requires at least six semester hours of thesis coursework and the department head's permission to enroll. The College of Graduate Studies posts its Thesis and Dissertation Manual with a Word file of pre-formatted preliminary pages, the four approval forms from proposal to final approval, and a ProQuest binding and publishing document. Its statistical consulting service helps graduate and doctoral students with data management and analysis for theses, dissertations and similar capstone projects; class assignments fall outside it.
Once the committee's revisions are in, our editors can give a thesis, dissertation or course paper a final edit for grammar, consistency and format.
