Grants and Writing Resources for Technical University of Munich
Bastrop, Texas, hosted the Not-A-Boring Competition 2025, and TUM Boring, the Technical University of Munich's student tunnelling team, took the overall victory against seven international competitors. By the award ceremony its machine had bored 17 meters, while no other team had gone past 2. The students kept drilling afterward and stopped at 22.5 meters, a new length record and their third win in three appearances.
Research Travel for Doctoral Candidates
The TUM Graduate School's internationalization funding co-funds research stays at institutions abroad, talks on a candidate's own findings at international conferences and symposia, subject-specific summer or winter schools abroad, and invitations to international researchers who come to TUM to work on the dissertation. Research and teaching associates, scholarship holders and self-funded candidates can receive up to €1,300, plus another €1,400 for a research stay of at least four weeks. Scholarship holders must show that their funder doesn't cover travel. Support normally comes in the second half of the doctorate, after the kick-off seminar and feedback talk, unless the supervisor confirms that an earlier trip benefits the project.
A Diversity Supplement Travel Grant of up to €500 per trip helps candidates with family obligations or special health or other needs who face significant extra costs on a subject-specific trip abroad.
Writing Consultations
The Language Center's English Writing Center gives free one-to-one consultations to TUM students, in person at the Munich City Campus, Garching-Forschungszentrum and Weihenstephan, or online over Microsoft Teams. Writers bring up to five pages of English text per session, whether a section of a thesis or article, an essay or a cover letter, and can book up to twelve appointments a semester. For German, the Language Center runs a separate German Language Consultation for writing, speaking and learning the language.
Doctoral candidates can also take the Graduate School's Scientific Paper Writing courses, offered each semester, as its publishing page notes.
Finishing and Publishing the Dissertation
Near the end, the Graduate School's online Towards the Finish Line session, held in English, walks candidates through submission requirements, strategies for the last writing phase from data to dissertation, and the status change after the doctorate; the University Library presents how to publish. TUM dissertations can appear in print through a publishing house, in which case four copies with an ISBN go to the University Library, or electronically only, an option open to every candidate, according to the Graduate School.
