Grants and Writing Resources for Texas A&M International University

TAMIU reported in March 2026 that a doctoral student in criminal justice had taken first place for her poster at the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in Philadelphia. Working from national data in the 2022 Census of Law Enforcement Training Academies, she found that terrorism and hate crime instruction averages about five hours, against roughly 40 to 70 hours for core training areas.

Where Students Present

LEARN, the university's Quality Enhancement Plan for experiential learning, runs the LEARN Expo, where students show a printed poster on an internship, research project or service-learning course and what it taught them. At the second annual Expo in April 2026, 74 student groups presented over two sessions. Undergraduate Research Week, whose winners were announced with the Expo's, added a Lightning Talk Competition of roughly five-minute talks and a Graduate Research Showcase for graduate posters.

Students heading to a conference can get posters printed free through TAMIU ARC. Requests need a faculty sponsor and at least a week of lead time.

Honors Scholarships and Travel

Members of the University Honors Program take on Honors contracts and thesis projects. The program's two honors scholarships, the D.D. Hachar Honors Scholars Program and the G.B.P. Newman Scholarship, each pay $3,000 per academic year, half at the start of a semester and half at the end once requirements are met. Hachar is the oldest, set up in 2000.

Honors students presenting a paper or poster tied to their thesis work can apply for a travel stipend of up to $700 per academic year. Proof of acceptance is required, first-time applicants get priority, and a post-travel summary follows the trip. In March 2026 the Honors and Undergraduate Research Program sent students to present at the Capital of Texas Undergraduate Research Conference at UT Austin.

Graduate Funding

The Graduate School's financial assistance page asks for a Graduate Financial Assistance Application and lists three awards. A Graduate Assistantship of 20 hours a week pays up to $15,000 for master's students and $18,000 for doctoral students over the nine-month fall and spring term. A Graduate Fellowship of 10 hours a week pays up to $9,000 a year for master's students and $12,000 for doctoral students. The Graduate Scholarship, which asks for a 3.500 GPA, reaches $3,000 a year at the master's level and $4,500 for doctoral students.

Graduate students attending a conference for professional development can claim travel reimbursement with receipts and proof of participation. Two program awards are narrower. The Dr. Jerry Thompson Graduate Student Travel Fund pays for research travel in the MA in History and Political Thought, and the A.R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business offers a one-year Business Fellowship to MBA, MS-IS and MPAcc students.

Help With Writing and Theses

Undergraduates can book writing sessions through ACE Campus Tutoring on the first floor of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library, one-on-one or in groups. Master's and PhD students have a Graduate Writing Consultant for 45-minute or hour-long tutoring, thesis and dissertation help with structure, grammar and APA, MLA or Chicago formatting, and a review service for pieces under two pages. The consultant can point out errors and recommend corrections, and the Graduate School describes the service as tutoring.

The Thesis and Dissertation office works from a Policy Manual and a Formatting Manual. Its policy manual says the Graduate School reviews formatting only, and during review a student may make only the corrections it requires; changes requested by the student, chair or committee are not accepted at that stage. Approved theses go into Research Information Online, the TAMIU repository; dissertations also appear through ProQuest.

Before a thesis goes to the Graduate School, or a paper goes to a professor, our editors can give it a final check for grammar, consistency and format.
