Grants and Writing Resources for Texas Christian University

Bakame AI teaches students in Rwanda through phone calls, in Kinyarwanda, and it was founded by two TCU students who study in the AddRan College of Liberal Arts and the Neeley School of Business. In October 2026 the Roach Honors College reported that the founders had taken first place at the Global Mission Institute Summit World Cup Challenge, the only all-undergraduate team in the finals. Earlier in the year the platform won the Global Best M-Gov Award.

Posters and Research Money

Students who work with faculty in the Davis College of Science & Engineering can apply to the Science & Engineering Research Center (SERC) for modest research funding, offered early in the fall and spring semesters. SERC has paid for more than 800 undergraduate projects since 2006. About half of the undergraduate projects at each year's Student Research Symposium carry its support. Any science student doing research is encouraged to present there. The 2024 symposium, the 21st, filled four floors of the Tucker Technology Center with 192 posters and closed with an awards ceremony.

Chancellor Daniel W. Pullin created the Chancellor's Student Research Award to support promising student research at TCU. In the 2026 round, more than 150 student researchers presented at LEAD ON: Values in Action Week and 10 finalists applied for further funding. Three won. A fine arts senior plans more testing of a seam design for space suits, a kinesiology master's student is working on a model to predict adult bone density, and a physics doctoral candidate is moving brain vascular imaging from cell studies to animal models.

Graduate Travel and Fellowships

Graduate Studies and the Graduate Student Senate split the cost of the Research & Creative Activities Fellowship, a travel award for graduate students presenting research, scholarly or creative work at a conference, exhibition or performance. From July 1, 2026, it pays up to $800 for domestic travel and up to $1,000 for international travel. Research doctoral students get priority, and a student may hold one award per academic year.

The head of each graduate program awards graduate fellowships, which pay tuition, a stipend or both and carry no duties beyond program requirements. Students presenting a thesis or dissertation can enter the Three Minute Thesis competition with one static slide. Cash prizes go to first, second and third place, and the audience votes for a People's Choice winner.

A Student Journal and National Awards

eleven40seven is TCU's student-run undergraduate journal of the arts. An undergraduate staff and one faculty advisor publish it twice a year. The Bryson Literary Society started it in 2005, and the TCU English Department and the Institute of Critical and Creative Expression help fund it.

Students aiming at externally funded awards from government agencies and foundations can work with the Nationally Competitive Scholarships program in the John V. Roach Honors College. Its director helps with applications and convenes mock interview panels.

Writing Center and Thesis Format

The William L. Adams Center for Writing is in Room 1160 of the Mary Couts Burnett Library. Writers can meet a consultant in person or on Zoom, or submit a draft online and get feedback, usually within two business days. Its Graduate Writing Center takes theses, dissertations, funding proposals and book manuscripts, and holds writers retreats for students working on a thesis or dissertation. Consultants comment on organization, content, source documentation and sentence-level patterns, and they teach writers to find and fix recurring errors. The center states that it is not a copyediting or proofreading service.

Graduate Studies posts the Word thesis and dissertation templates and formatting manuals that several colleges provide. The AddRan manual calls competent outside proofreaders advisable and leaves the student with full responsibility for the proofreading. Under that manual, a PDF of the finished manuscript goes to the associate dean for graduate studies for a format check, and the final version is uploaded to ProQuest and kept in TCU's online repository of theses and dissertations.

The AddRan manual recommends an outside proofreader, and our editors can give a thesis or essay a final check for grammar, consistency and format before it goes to Graduate Studies or a professor.
