Grants and Writing Resources for Texas State University

Phi Kappa Phi gave its $1,000 Love of Learning Award to 155 students nationwide in 2026, and five of them are Texas State doctoral students, studying applied anthropology, materials science, educational and community leadership, and mathematics education. One of the five also received the Margaret and Peter Dzwilewski Love of Learning Award, which went to a single student in the country.

Undergraduate Research Fellowships

Each semester a committee awards 10 to 12 Undergraduate Research Fellowships of up to $1,500. Any major can apply, and Honors College membership isn't required. The money pays for equipment, supplies, services and research travel. Travel to present at an outside conference has to come from other sources.

Fellows finish the project within a year and then share it with the campus. They can present at the Honors Research Forum or the Undergraduate Research Conference, lead an Honors Coffee Forum dialogue, or publish in the undergraduate research journal. A student can hold two fellowships at most.

Where Undergraduate Papers Appear

The Texas State Undergraduate Research Journal (TXSTUR) publishes undergraduate research and scholarship in all fields. It invites class papers, fellowship projects, thesis or capstone work adapted for the journal, and other expository writing. Volume 13, the spring 2025 issue, went online in November 2025 with six articles.

Graduate College Funding

The Graduate College funds thesis and dissertation research through two fellowships. The Thesis Research Support Fellowship pays up to $2,000 to master's students with an approved thesis proposal who are enrolled in a thesis course. The Doctoral Research Support Fellowship pays up to $5,000 to doctoral candidates. Both cover materials, research travel and specialized equipment. Conference travel, printing and binding, publication costs and tuition are excluded, and a student can win each award only once.

Continuing students in face-to-face or hybrid programs can apply for the Graduate College Scholarship, $1,000 a semester for up to three semesters. For a conference paper, poster or performance, Graduate Student Travel Funds provide up to $150 toward one presentation a year through August 2027.

Writing Help and Submission

The University Writing Center works with students, faculty and staff in person in San Marcos and Round Rock and online. For graduate writers it adds Write Time group sessions, Thesis/Dissertation Writing appointments of 25 or 50 minutes, and a ProQuest formatting workshop.

Theses and dissertations follow the Graduate College's Thesis and Dissertation Information page, which links the Focus on Formatting Guide, Word and LaTeX templates and a final formatting checklist. Starting with fall 2026 graduates, documents go in through ProQuest ETD Administrator for Graduate College review and final approval, and University Libraries preserves the approved copy.

Once a thesis is ready for ProQuest or a class paper is headed to TXSTUR, our editors can give it a last pass for grammar, consistency and format.
