Grants and Writing Resources for Toronto Metropolitan University

A master's student in occupational and public health won Toronto Metropolitan University's 2026 Three Minute Thesis competition; a psychology PhD student was runner-up, and a chemical engineering PhD student took the Participants' Choice Award. At fall convocation in October 2025, TMU gave its Gold Medal, the university's highest student honour, to five master's students and two doctoral students, in programs from fashion to physics.

Three Minute Thesis and Conference Travel

TMU's 3MT is open to master's students in thesis or MRP programs and to PhD students past their first year, provided their proposal is approved. Talks are spoken from memory, with one static slide at most. Going over three minutes means disqualification. The winner receives $1,000, the runner-up $500 and the Participants' Choice winner $250, and TMU pays the winner's expenses to compete at the Ontario 3MT.

For conferences off campus, the Graduate Student Travel Fund gives full-time graduate students up to $500 once per academic year toward a regional, national or international conference where they are presenting, whether as a speaker, a poster presenter or a panel member.

Scholarships and a Thesis Prize

The Yeates School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies keeps a long list of graduate scholarships and awards, from TMU's own funds to federal and provincial programs. Some need no application. Eligible students are automatically considered for Toronto Met Graduate Fellowships of up to $12,000 for master's students and $16,000 for doctoral students. Others are tied to a research area: the Geoffrey F. Bruce Fellowship in Canadian Freshwater Policy is worth $25,000, and the CERC HECW PhD Completion Scholarship is worth $6,000.

Finished doctoral work has its own prize. Each PhD program director may nominate one graduate for the Dr. C. Ravi and Shanti Ravindran Award for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis, a single $3,400 award each year that judges the dissertation on originality and on what it adds to knowledge, including advances of national significance. It is presented at fall convocation.

Writing Support

Students can book Writing and English Language Support appointments with a trained writing consultant at any stage of a paper, or a supported self-editing session in which a student staff member acts as second reader and points out errors for you to fix. Essay 101 is a six-week workshop series that starts with essay structure and ends with drafting and revising.

Graduate writers have a separate program. Graduate Student Support offers master's and PhD students one-on-one consultations on writing, from grant applications to dissertation chapters. Its weekly Coffee and Writing group is three hours of silent writing, in person or on Zoom, and students who feel stuck can ask for 50-minute sessions with a dissertation or MRP coach. All TMU graduate students can sign up for its Graduate Write-a-thons, held in person and on Zoom.

Finding TMU Theses

According to the library's theses guide, RShare, the TMU Library digital repository, holds the most complete online collection of TMU graduate theses and dissertations. Older documents, including undergraduate theses, may be in the Omni catalogue.
