Grants and Writing Resources for Union University

Union students gave 123 presentations at the 23rd Scholarship Symposium in March 2026: 82 posters and 41 talks by undergraduate and graduate researchers. Writers win prizes off campus too. The staff of the Cardinal & Cream, Union's student publication, took the grand prize for feature writing at the Baptist Communicators Association student competition in 2024, along with first places in opinion and column writing.

Presenting Research

Every spring the Union University Research Program holds the Scholarship Symposium, where undergraduate and graduate students present projects completed with a faculty adviser. The 23rd symposium, held March 31, 2026, drew 123 presentations: 82 posters in the Grant Center and 41 talks in classrooms across campus.

Writing Awards and Honor Societies

The English faculty give the Helen Blythe Creative Writing Award to the graduating senior they judge the best creative writer. English majors and minors with at least a 3.0 in English courses can join Union's chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the national English honor society, organized in 1979. Graduate nursing students are invited into Nu Lambda, Union's chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, once they finish about a quarter of the curriculum with a 3.5 GPA, as the graduate nursing handbook describes.

Publishing

The Cardinal & Cream is Union's student publication. Its writers won the grand prize for feature writing at the Baptist Communicators Association student competition, along with first places in opinion writing and column writing, as Union reported in November 2024.

EdD dissertations are submitted to ProQuest after the College of Education's format review under its Dissertation Handbook.

Writing Support

Union's Writing Center works with any Union student at any stage, from brainstorming to proofreading. Sessions run one-on-one, in groups, online, or as workshops. The center also posts handouts on APA and MLA citation.
