Grants and Writing Resources for Universidad de Chile
For the third year running, Universidad de Chile undergraduates took gold in Tsinghua University's Poverty Alleviation Challenge, whose 2026 edition drew more than 600 young people in 119 teams from 88 institutions. The gold-winning team, which included two International Studies students and an engineering student, proposed turning fish-processing waste into biogas, biomethane and fertilizer for artisanal fishers in the Biobío Region. A Commercial Engineering student's team took silver with an AI assistant for classroom teachers. The university counts ten of its students among the winners across the challenge's three editions.
Doctoral Scholarships
The university pays some of its own doctoral students directly. The Beca de Doctorado Universidad de Chile (Universidad de Chile Doctoral Scholarship) gave 2026 recipients a monthly stipend of 900,000 Chilean pesos for twelve months plus an exemption from tuition, excluding enrollment fees. It is meant for first- and second-year doctoral students with no other funding who have applied for the national ANID doctoral scholarship; each Escuela de Postgrado nominates up to two candidates per program, and the award can be renewed with timely progress.
Master's and doctoral students in the social sciences and humanities can compete for the Sylff fellowship, funded by a trust the university received in 2002 under a program the Nippon Foundation created in 1987. Every faculty and institute also offers its own discounts or support for graduate students, according to the graduate financing page.
Help Finishing the Thesis
Undergraduates writing a thesis, or preparing to defend one, can join the Programa de Escritura para la Titulación (Thesis Writing Program) run by the Departamento de Pregrado's learning unit. Students in any faculty can book one-on-one sessions with a specialist advisor. Workshops cover writing, reading, research, the oral defense and the move into a career. The program started in September 2019, and by August 2020 nearly 1,000 undergraduate thesis writers had taken part, with sessions moved online during the pandemic.
Where Theses Are Published
Finished theses at every level, from pregrado to doctorado, go into the Repositorio Académico de la Universidad de Chile. It holds 64,289 theses alongside more than 42,000 journal articles and about 1,300 books, with varying levels of access.
