Grants and Writing Resources for Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

Between February and April 2026, student teams from UTM's Faculty of Computing brought home seven awards from three competitions: two Golds at INNOVEX 2026, two Golds and two Silvers at i-GEN 2026, and first runner-up at the Malaysia Creative Tech Competition. Earlier, at KOSEN Global Camp 2024 in Kagoshima, Japan, three UTM students in civil engineering, software engineering and computer science were among 95 students from around the world, and the team led by the civil engineering student took the Gold Prize. The winning entry was a smart system for collecting shrimp molts.

Doctoral Scholarships

The School of Graduate Studies lists its funding on one scholarships and financial aid page. The two UTM ASCEND scholarships, Fast Track and Bright Talent, each cover tuition for six semesters and pay RM 3,000 a month to PhD applicants aged 35 or under with a strong bachelor's CGPA (3.67 for Fast Track, 3.50 for Bright Talent). Smaller help is there too. International PhD students in semesters one to six can receive an International Doctoral Fellowship, a partial tuition waiver of RM 2,000, and the National Postgraduates Fund gives Malaysian master's and doctoral students RM 1,000 off tuition, with priority for households earning RM 8,000 or less.

Conference and Publication Support

The UTM Young Scholars Grant covers up to RM 700 of a conference trip for PhD students and RM 500 for Master by Research students, once per student. You need to be the invited oral presenter and first student author. Postgraduates who publish can also apply for the Postgraduates Publication Incentive, listed on the same page with its own application form.

Dissertation Support

UTM's Thesis Formatting 2023 guide gives PhD and master's candidates Word templates in Malay and English, LaTeX templates for offline use or Overleaf, cover design files, video tutorials and every submission form, including an AI-use declaration. Postgraduates also take the compulsory UTM Thesis Template course, one of the training and support programmes organised by UTM and the Postgraduate Student Society, whose faculty chapters ran sessions in 2023 on proposal and progress reports, viva preparation and publishing in high-impact journals.
