Grants and Writing Resources for the University of Alabama in Huntsville
Women In Defense, an affiliate of the National Defense Industrial Association, gave out six national scholarships for 2025. One went to a UAH doctoral student in aerospace engineering, UAH reported in October 2025, and it was the third time the group had honored her.
Paid Summer Research
The Research and Creative Experience for Undergraduates (RCEU) pays a $4,000 stipend, in two installments, for a 10-week summer project done one-on-one with a full-time UAH faculty member or researcher. Applicants must be undergraduates enrolled at UAH in the spring before and the fall after, and a student can hold the award once. Each student presents the work in at least one public forum and attends summer professional development sessions.
Honors College students have a parallel track. The Honors Capstone Research Summer Program also pays $4,000 for 10 weeks of work toward an Honors Capstone, with writing workshops built in. During the year, Honors Research Mini-Grants of up to $300 buy lab or studio supplies, software and equipment rental for a capstone or thesis. The Honors Travel Award adds $300 toward presenting Honors work at a juried conference, performance or exhibit.
Posters and Perpetua
Every spring the Research Horizons Day poster session brings together graduate and undergraduate presenters from every college. UAH undergraduates also show posters to Alabama legislators at Posters at the Capitol in Montgomery, and the VBSymposium, organized by the American Astronautical Society with UAH, NASA Marshall and the National Space Club–Huntsville, holds a student poster competition.
Perpetua: The Journal of Undergraduate Research at UAH is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal run by undergraduates with faculty advisors. It takes research papers, case studies and comparative book review essays of 2,500 words or less from any major, and a faculty mentor must read and approve each manuscript first. Accepted articles appear on LOUIS, the UAH research repository.
Assistantships and Fellowship Advising
In the College of Business, graduate assistantships come in two forms. A part-time assistant works 10 hours a week and gets 4.5 hours of tuition paid; a full-time assistant works 20 hours and gets up to 12. Both draw a stipend paid every two weeks. Students need unconditional admission and a 3.0 GPA, and they must carry at least nine graduate hours in fall and spring.
For national awards, UAH's Fellowship Advisor meets students one-on-one to find a fellowship or graduate program, plan the application and work on the essays, from the first search to the award notice.
Writing Tutors and the Thesis Manual
Undergraduate and graduate students can book writing tutoring through the Student Success Center, on the first floor of Salmon Library, in person or online. Appointments cover any written assignment in a UAH course and any stage of the work, from reading the assignment to organizing and revising.
Graduate students follow the Graduate School's Thesis, Dissertation, and DNP Project Manual. The manual page sets out the Graduate Council's expectation that each document meet the highest standards of English language, grammar and readability. Optional templates come in Word and in LaTeX on Overleaf; DNP students use their program's template. The manual, last updated in spring 2023, sends the defended document to ProQuest ETD, where the student makes copyedits with feedback from the Graduate School copyeditor. Finished work is kept in UAH Electronic Theses and Dissertations, with separate collections for dissertations, DNP projects and theses.
If a thesis or dissertation needs a final edit for grammar, consistency and manual format before the ProQuest upload, our editors can take it on.
