Grants and Writing Resources for the University of Bath
On 21 October 2026 Team Bath Heart finished second of 17 teams at the Heart Hackathon in Suzhou, China, a competition in which students design, build and evaluate a total artificial heart. The student-led team has more than 70 members, and its latest prototype, the TBH26, is more compact than the versions before it.
Funding for Doctoral Research
For October 2027 entry, the University Research Studentship Award (URSA) pays Home or Overseas tuition fees, a competitive annual maintenance stipend and a training support fund of up to £1,000 each year. It runs three years for a PhD in Humanities & Social Sciences, three and a half in Science or Engineering & Design, and four in the School of Management. Home and international applicants can apply with at least an upper-second class honours degree or the international equivalent, and Engineering & Design reserves one studentship a year for applicants with refugee, humanitarian protection or asylum seeker status.
Doctoral students already at Bath can apply for smaller grants. Research Training Support Grants come attached to a studentship and can pay for equipment, UK fieldwork, conferences, summer schools and language courses for overseas fieldwork. A research mobility scheme funds Bath students and visitors from partner institutions at up to £1,000 a month for up to six months. Student Change Projects grants of up to £1,000 pay for training, networking events and conferences that improve research culture.
Scholarships for Master's and Undergraduate Study
International applicants joining a full-time taught master's in September 2027 can hold a Bath Global Excellence Scholarship, a £10,000 fee waiver with up to 250 awards made on academic excellence and potential. UK nationals entering master's study in September 2027 can receive the Diamond Scholarship, a £3,000 fee waiver that rewards strong academic credentials. Both cover courses in the faculties of Engineering & Design, Humanities & Social Sciences and Science. The School of Management runs separate scholarships.
For undergraduates, the Gold Scholarship Programme takes up to 50 students a year. It is open to Home UK undergraduates with an assessed household income of £30,000 or below who also meet a contextual criterion. Scholars give 50 hours a year to volunteering, fundraising or outreach.
Writing Help
The Academic Skills Team works with all students, whatever the course. Students book in-person 1:1 tutorials in the Skills Zone through MySkills, or upload a draft for Email Feedback on Writing. Skills for Success workshops run each semester, and MySkills holds self-access resources.
Doctoral students can add thesis-writing workshops from MyDoctoralDevelopment, which the University's thesis specifications point to.
Thesis Rules and the Research Portal
QA7 Appendix 6 sets the specifications for doctoral and research degree theses and portfolios. The University sets no length or word limit for a doctoral thesis or portfolio. Pages are A4, and the main text is ordinarily black at 11 or 12 point. The declaration of authorship names any work carried out by other researchers. Each co-authored paper in a thesis built from papers carries a statement of authorship. Under QA7 Appendix 2, the student makes sure reports and the final thesis are prepared in a professional manner with the correct use of English, and that the thesis conforms to the University's required format.
Research postgraduates deposit the thesis in Pure, the University's research information system. After the degree is approved, it appears on the Bath Research Portal under a CC BY-NC-ND licence by default, and authors may choose a less restrictive licence such as CC BY. A one-year restriction on online access is requested on the HD3 form. Longer embargoes need approval from the Board of Studies (Doctoral).
A thesis, dissertation or essay that is ready for a last check on grammar, consistency and format can come to our editors. See our University of Bath dissertation and thesis editing and University of Bath essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
