Grants and Writing Resources for the University of Bergen
Five third-year law students from UiB won the international EEA moot court competition in Iceland, the Faculty of Law reported in March 2026, and one of the five also received the prize for best oral pleading. In all, 76 UiB law students made the trip, and two UiB teams reached the final.
Grants for Master's Projects and Research
Master's students in their first, second or third semester, from any faculty, can apply for the Grønn master stipend from Klimafondet ved UiB. The stipend is an incentive for master's theses on climate, environment and sustainability, and each award is NOK 10,000.
L. Meltzers Universitetsstiftelse, founded in 1947, exists to promote scientific work at the University of Bergen and supports gifted students at the university. Its grant categories include project grants and grants for scientific research activity, travel included.
Where Doctoral Candidates Present
In UiB's Three Minute Thesis (3MT) final, PhD candidates present their research to the public. At the 2026 final, held on 24 March in Storsalen, the winner was to receive a NOK 1,500 gift card and the chance to compete for a place in the Coimbra Group's international 3MT final at the University of Granada. The candidate selected could also present at the SANORD conference at the University of Namibia. A PhD student from the Brenk lab placed third that year and won NOK 1,000.
Help With Writing
The Study Station offers 30-minute sessions with a writing mentor on academic writing and study technique. It serves students in one-year programmes, bachelor's students, and students up to the third year of integrated master's and professional programmes. Mentors work on the structure and language of a text and do not proofread.
The University Library gives courses and one-to-one guidance in literature searching, source use, reference tools and academic writing, in person or on Teams or Zoom. It points students to Søk og Skriv for reading and academic writing, and doctoral candidates to PhD on Track. PhD candidates and researchers can take courses on systematic literature searching and bibliometrics, and one on publishing and open access.
Submitting the Thesis
At the Faculty of Science and Technology, PhD candidates submit the thesis digitally to the PhD coordinator at their department, with a completed application form. The thesis is assessed exactly as submitted, and candidates follow the layout and structure template at avhandling.uib.no. The thesis must be publicly available before the defence, and the candidate prepares a press release in Norwegian with the supervisor.
UiB's page on academic integrity and cheating states that work handed in for submissions and exams must be the student's independent work. What counts as cheating can vary between faculties, fields, courses and forms of examination. Academic fields may judge AI tools differently, and academic work should describe how a text generator was used.
Our editors can give an essay, master's thesis or doctoral thesis a final check of grammar, consistency and format before it goes in. See our University of Bergen dissertation and thesis editing and University of Bergen essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
