Grants and Writing Resources for University of Copenhagen

At the University of Copenhagen's Shut up and Write mornings, PhD students from the Faculties of Humanities, Law, Social Sciences and Theology write in three 45-minute blocks with phones and email off. No registration is needed. In August 2026 the Faculty of Law's Centre for Law and Security held a PhD Symposium on Law and Security open to doctoral researchers from all disciplines, each of whom presented a project and served as discussant for another participant.

Writing Courses and Sessions

The PhD School in the Humanities lists two writing courses worth 2.5 ECTS each on its PhD courses page. Fundamentals of Academic Writing in English works on sentence and paragraph structure, cohesion and the author's own voice. Research Writing in English is built for dissertation and article drafts, with four group sessions held every second week and two 45-minute individual consultations. Courses in the national PhD course network are usually free for PhD students at participating universities.

For plain writing time, there are Shut up and Write mornings. PhD students from the Faculties of Humanities, Law, Social Sciences and Theology write in three 45-minute blocks with phones and email off, taking breaks between them. No registration is needed.

Presenting Your Research

In autumn 2026 the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences ran a two-day research communication workshop in which each PhD student gave a five-minute talk on their own project and got instruction in rhetorical and journalistic technique. It was free for PhD students at Danish universities other than Copenhagen Business School.

In August 2026 the Faculty of Law's Centre for Law and Security (CERES) held a PhD Symposium on Law and Security alongside its main conference. It was open to doctoral researchers from all disciplines, who presented their projects, served as discussant for another participant and received feedback from faculty. Those who attended both the symposium and the conference earned 1 ECTS.

Publishing and the PhD Thesis

The University Library teaches Open up your Academic Publishing Toolbox, a 1-ECTS course for UCPH PhD students and academic staff. It covers copyright, Creative Commons licences, open access publishing, how researchers are evaluated and the FAIR principles for research data. It runs every semester, in English.

At the end of the degree, the PhD thesis goes to the Royal Library for plagiarism screening. It must then be made available to the public within a reasonable time, according to the PhD programme's Concluding the PhD page.

For a final edit before submission, our PhD-level editors work with UCPH students at every level. See our University of Copenhagen dissertation and thesis editing page, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
