Grants and Writing Resources for University of Glasgow
In Eindhoven in August 2026, a ten-member University of Glasgow student team called GLAsense won the Innovation Award at the SensUs competition for a wearable sensor that continuously measures levodopa, the main medication for Parkinson's disease. The team drew undergraduates in biomedical and mechanical engineering and MSc students in biosciences and electrical engineering, and they designed the device with Glasgow's Young Onset Parkinson's Group. It was their second Innovation Award in three years.
Money for Conferences and Research Trips
Research students in the College of Arts & Humanities can apply for Research Support Awards, which pay for presenting a paper at a conference or for travel to archives and fieldwork; the College says awards are unlikely to exceed £400. The same page lists Collaborative Research Awards of up to about £1,000 for PGR-led conferences, symposia, reading groups and publications that cross subjects, schools or institutions. Apply before spending anything. Costs already paid aren't covered.
For longer stays, the Mac Robertson Travel Scholarship gives up to £4,000 to a postgraduate researcher at Glasgow or Strathclyde for two months to a year of study at a centre of advanced study, preferably outside Scotland.
Doctoral Scholarships
The James McCune Smith PhD Scholarships fund 12 Black UK-domiciled doctoral students with fees and a stipend for up to four years, a £3,000 yearly training grant, a six-month placement outside academia and an external mentor. In the arts and humanities, the Arts & Humanities Doctoral Landscape Awards cover full fees and a UKRI stipend for at least 42 months, with six more months available for training, internships or visiting research, and they're open to applicants from anywhere in the world.
Publishing and Prizes
eSharp is Glasgow's online journal for postgraduate research in the arts, humanities, social sciences and education. Graduate students run it entirely, and every article goes through double-blind peer review.
Students on the MLitt, distance MLitt and MFA/DFA in Creative Writing were eligible for the 2024 North Literary Agency Prize, set up with the agency in 2019 and awarded annually; it carried £1,000 and the chance of representation. All research postgraduates deposit their theses in Enlighten: Theses, the University's thesis repository, which can be browsed by year, subject, school and funder.
Help With Writing
Student Learning Development offers one-to-one writing and study advice appointments and dissertation classes, and all undergraduate and taught postgraduate students take its online Academic Writing Skills Programme, usually in Semester 1. First- and second-year undergraduates can also book a peer writing adviser, a student who's recently been in the same situation, for 30 or 60 minutes in person or on Teams.
For a final edit before submission, our PhD-level editors work with Glasgow students at every level. See our University of Glasgow dissertation and thesis editing and University of Glasgow essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
