Grants and Writing Resources for the University of Houston-Clear Lake

A Master of Arts in Teaching student at UHCL, who earned a medical degree in Pakistan before turning to the classroom, was selected as an inaugural NASA Texas Space Grant Consortium STEM Ambassador for the 2026-27 academic year. She was also selected to receive the Cynthia L. Schneider Mathematics Preservice Teacher Scholarship and is now completing her clinical teaching.

Presenting Research and Creative Work

The Student Conference for Research and Creative Arts held its 32nd year during April 20-25, 2026. Undergraduates and graduate students from every discipline present original work in a variety of formats, and students from other institutions and partner high schools may take part.

Education students have a second venue. At the 10th Annual Greater Houston Area STEM Conference, held at UHCL on March 28, 2026, UHCLTeach undergraduates presented posters and doctoral students in Curriculum and Instruction gave research-based presentations on classroom practice, equity and professional learning. The program ran to nearly 80 sessions.

Scholarships for New and Continuing Students

The Hawk Scholars Scholarship goes to new resident graduate students and to new non-resident and international students at both levels with a 3.0 GPA. For students starting in spring 2027 it pays $2,000, renews at $1,000 each for fall 2027 and spring 2028, and lets recipients pay resident tuition. UHCL alumni who began a graduate program in summer or fall 2026 can receive the $1,000 Higher-Up Scholarship, paid half in fall and half in spring.

Current students apply in February for the following fall. The scholarships page groups those awards into general and college categories and lists study abroad awards such as the International Education Fee Award.

The Writing Center

The UHCL Writing Center, part of the Student Success Center, works with undergraduate and graduate writers at no charge. Appointments last 45 minutes, in person on the second floor of the Student Services and Classroom Building or over Microsoft Teams. Drop-ins run up to 20 minutes. A writer can also attach up to five pages to a drop-off appointment and get a short video of a consultant's feedback by the end of the business day.

Writers with a thesis, dissertation or semester-long research project can book weekly or biweekly recurring appointments with the same consultant. Under the center's policies, sessions are conversation-based: the consultant discusses the writing with its author and does not edit it. Writers may book five appointments a week.

Format Checks and HawkWorks

Every thesis, project or dissertation needs a format check from the Neumann Library to confirm it meets UHCL specifications. Students complete a required tutorial first, then book a virtual or in-person appointment.

The final PDF goes through Vireo, as the library's submission guide explains. Print copies are not accepted, and once the file is in, the only corrections allowed are those the library requires. Finished work appears open access in HawkWorks, the UHCL institutional repository, unless the student chooses an embargo of six months, one year or two years.

A graduate project headed for its Neumann Library format check, or a course paper, can get a last pass from our editors for grammar, consistency and format.
