Grants and Writing Resources for The University of Manchester
The Manchester Doctoral College held its MDC Excellence Awards on 17 June 2026, recognising work across the postgraduate research community from international research partnerships to outstanding research outputs. Four winners took Societal Impact awards. Three more were honoured for Outstanding Research Output.
Writing Help From the Library
Manchester's library runs My Learning Essentials, its programme of face-to-face workshops and online resources for study skills. The writing guide collects everything the library offers on writing. Workshops range from How to Write an Effective Introduction to a session on proofreading as the final stage before submission. You can also book a one-to-one consultation, on campus or online, with the library's Royal Literary Fund Fellow.
The Academic Phrasebank is the University of Manchester's own. It sorts example phrases by the main sections of a research paper or dissertation, and lists others under the general jobs of academic writing, such as defining terms or being cautious.
Conference and Training Funds
The Manchester Doctoral College oversees doctoral training across the university and names the President's Doctoral Scholarship as one of its flagship funding opportunities. The College lists a conference attendance fund among its specific funds. Science and Engineering researchers apply to the Doctoral Training and Development Support Fund, capped at £500, which covers conference attendance or other training and runs in three competitive rounds a year.
Where Theses Are Published
Manchester's library guide to theses points to three places. Library Search holds postgraduate research theses from the late 19th century to the present, Research Explorer carries open access doctoral theses submitted from 2010 on, and ProQuest has digitised doctoral theses from before 2010.
University policy requires a final eThesis to be open access no more than 12 months after submission. The access options are immediate open access or a 12-month embargo, with longer embargoes for cases like sponsor contracts or sensitive data. Your supervisor approves the choice.
Our editors work with Manchester writers at the final-draft stage, from seminar papers to dissertations. See our University of Manchester dissertation and thesis editing page, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
