Grants and Writing Resources for University of Manitoba

Four University of Manitoba PhD students were named 2025 Vanier Scholars, among 166 chosen across Canada, and each receives $150,000 over three years. Their projects run from antidepressant use in Manitoba to detecting ergot toxins in wheat.

Undergraduate Research Awards

The Undergraduate Research Awards pay for a 16-week research placement, usually full-time from May through August, under a professor's mentorship in any field, creative work included. Each award totals $7,000. Up to 205 are offered, with at least 21 reserved for students who self-identify as Indigenous. Applicants need 24 credit hours and a 3.0 GPA.

Students present their results at the Undergraduate Research Showcase, a one-day event with oral, poster and innovation streams. Prizes total $7,500 across five categories.

Three Minute Thesis

Graduate students in thesis-based programs can enter UM's Three Minute Thesis and explain their research in three minutes with one slide. First place pays $2,000, second $1,250 and third $500, with smaller prizes for heat winners and the People's Choice. The UM winner goes on to the Western Regional Final.

Fellowships and Graduate Awards

The University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship pays master's students $20,000 a year and doctoral students $25,000 a year, for up to four years in total. Your department recommends you, so ask it about its process. The funding and awards page of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies also lists the J.W. Dafoe Graduate Fellowship for Study in International Relations and the President Szathmary's Graduate Scholarship in Human Genetics.

Strong theses earn recognition too. An Education PhD student holds the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' UM Distinguished Master's Thesis Prize for work on Agrippa's shared authority with Augustus.

Writing Help and Retreats

The Academic Learning Centre offers free writing and study-skills tutoring to undergraduate and graduate students all year, online and in person. Graduate students can apply for the three-day Graduate Writing Retreat, run with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, where each day opens with a short workshop and the stretch goal is 10,000 words. Preference goes to students close to finishing a proposal, thesis or dissertation. The faculty's GradSteps workshops add sessions on research and communication.

The Thesis Repository

MSpace is UM's institutional repository. Its Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies community holds graduate theses and practica, 27,668 items when this page was written.
