Grants and Writing Resources for the University of Nevada, Reno

In 2026 a political science student in the Honors College was named a Harry S. Truman Scholar, only the eighth in University of Nevada, Reno history. Her proposal called on the U.S. Department of Commerce to update export controls for firearm modification devices. She also received a $2,400 Nevada Undergraduate Research Award for a study of how college students balance free speech with belonging.

Research Money for Undergraduates

The Nevada Undergraduate Research Award is open to undergraduates in any field and at any class standing. It comes in three sizes: $2,250 for a semester, $1,125 for a summer, and $3,375 for a summer plus a semester. The money can pay for materials and supplies, travel to collect data, or student wages at $15 an hour.

Each project needs a mentor from the university or the Desert Research Institute. Recipients attend workshops during the funded term, write a four-page report at the end, and present a poster of their findings.

Where Student Work Appears

Those posters go up at Wolf Pack Discoveries, held at the end of the fall, spring and summer terms. The event spans the university's disciplines, and student researchers display their posters and talk with visitors.

For a written article, the Nevada State Undergraduate Research Journal is a peer-reviewed journal for undergraduates in the state's higher education system. The Associated Students of the University of Nevada founded it in 2014. Students aiming at national awards such as the Truman, Rhodes, Marshall, Goldwater, Boren and Fulbright get one-on-one mentoring from the Office of Undergraduate Fellowships, which also works with graduate students and recent alumni.

Graduate Fellowships and Grants

The Graduate School awards Graduate Dean's Fellowships and Merit Scholarships by nomination. The fellowship pays incoming doctoral students $45,000 per academic year, typically to seven recipients, and adds an out-of-state tuition waiver for non-residents. The merit scholarship goes to master's, MFA and doctoral students: $10,000 a year for new admits and $5,000 for continuing students.

For international research, the Ozmen Institute for Global Studies offers a Graduate Student Research Grant of up to $2,000, whether the work takes place abroad or in the United States.

Writing Help and Filing a Thesis

The University Writing & Speaking Center works with writers at all levels online, through written feedback or live chat and video sessions. Graduate students can book up to an hour and a half of support, two days a week.

Finished theses and dissertations are submitted electronically through ProQuest. Under the Graduate School's filing guidelines, staff check every manuscript for margins, clarity of copy and pagination and run it through Turnitin. ProQuest then deposits the work in ScholarWolf, the university's repository.

Before a thesis goes to ProQuest or a paper goes to a professor, our editors can give it a final check for grammar, consistency and format.
