Grants and Writing Resources for University of New Brunswick
A UNB graduate student in physics took first place in the literature category of the Canadian Association of Physicists' 2025 Quantum Arts Competition with a poem titled "Pauli Matrices with Scaling Factors" (UNB Newsroom). The engineers had their day on April 2, 2026, when 210 students presented 56 final-year projects at the 12th annual Engineering Design Symposium in Fredericton's Allison D. McCain Commons, at the entrance to Head Hall, with prizes of up to $2,000 for the best designs.
Studying and Researching Abroad
UNB graduate students can take a project overseas with help from the School of Graduate Studies. Its travel funding list includes the Pam and John Little Overseas Scholarships, worth up to $15,000 for intensive research or study in the UK, with preference for Oxford or London, and the Fredrik and Catherine Eaton Graduate Fellowships, up to $10,000 a year for research, coursework or conference presentations at Queen's University Belfast. Both are open to master's and doctoral students on either campus. For shorter trips, each department holds a limited pot of School of Graduate Studies Travel Awards; ask your graduate secretary.
Fellowships and Graduate Awards
The School of Graduate Studies counts more than 160 internal awards, split between entrance awards for new graduate students and awards for current ones. The same office guides applications for the federal CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC Canada Graduate Research Awards at the master's and doctoral levels, and for the tri-agency Undergraduate Research Awards.
Writing Prizes and Student Journals
Fredericton's Department of English gives the English Departmental Essay Prize I, $100 a year, for an outstanding essay in any English course by a student who has completed first-year requirements. Creative writers from New Brunswick, undergraduate or graduate, can receive the $500 RM Vaughan Memorial Scholarship, which prefers a 2SLGBTQIA+ student in the Creative Writing stream.
For print, the creative writing program points students to Qwerty, a well-established student journal, and to volunteer work at The Fiddlehead, Canada's oldest literary journal. Recent UNB dissertations appear in UNB Scholar, the Libraries' open-access repository, which keeps separate collections for graduate and undergraduate research.
Honour Societies
The Sir Howard Douglas Scholars, founded in 2006, took in 21 students in March 2026 and now counts 328 members. Faculties nominate students who've finished at least two years of an undergraduate program and pair strong grades with work beyond the classroom.
Help With Writing
The UNB Writing Centres sit in Room 410 of the Harriet Irving Library in Fredericton and in the Hans W. Klohn Commons in Saint John. Students choose written comments, a video consultation or an in-person appointment, and can book up to two sessions a week. Exams aren't reviewed.
If you'd like an editor's eye on a thesis chapter or a research paper before it goes out, we can help. See our University of New Brunswick dissertation and thesis editing and University of New Brunswick essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
