Grants and Writing Resources for University of Northern British Columbia
In March 2026 a UNBC graduate student won the 2025–2026 Marna Feldt Graduate Publication Award from the Association for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies in Canada. The winning essay compares how Indigenous reindeer herders have met liquefied natural gas development at Hámmarfeasta and on the Yamal Peninsula, and it will be published in the peer-reviewed journal Scandinavian-Canadian Studies.
Three Minutes, One Slide
UNBC's Three Minute Thesis asks master's research and PhD students to explain their thesis to a non-specialist audience in three minutes, with one static slide. Go over and you're disqualified. First place earns $1,000, second $700 and third $300, and the winner goes on to represent UNBC at the 3MT Western Regional Finals. The 2025 competition was held on March 27, and its first-place finisher was named UNBC's representative at the regional finals at the University of Victoria.
UNBC's Research Showcase Series replaced the old Research Week with events spread across the year, including poster and oral sessions for student researchers. Its 2024 calendar included an undergraduate research mini-symposium in chemistry and biochemistry.
Research Funding
Among UNBC's internal funding opportunities, the Graduate Student Travel Award supports graduate students who are presenting or otherwise sharing their research. Undergraduates can get into research through the Undergraduate Research Experience Award, which a student applies for together with a faculty member, and international undergraduates interested in research careers can apply for the International Student Research Award. The graduate office's funding index also points to entrance scholarships and Tri-Agency awards.
Help With Writing
Writing tutoring at the Academic Success Centre is free to UNBC students, and the tutors are undergraduate and graduate students certified through the CRLA's International Tutor Certification Program. A one-to-one session usually runs 30 minutes to an hour in the Learning Commons and can cover anything from organizing a draft to using research sources. If you'd rather not meet, upload a paper to The Writing Hub; a tutor spends up to an hour on it and aims to reply within 48 hours.
The centre keeps separate material for thesis writers. Its proposal and thesis writing tools include sample theses from the UNBC collection and sample proposals from social work and international studies, and tutors will spot-check a chapter by appointment.
The Thesis Collection
The UNBC Library sends readers looking for its thesis collection to UNBC Digital Collections, the university's institutional repository and a member of the Arca collaborative repository. In October 2026 it listed 30,826 items.
If you'd like an editor's eye on a thesis chapter or a research paper before it goes out, we can help. See our University of Northern British Columbia dissertation and thesis editing page, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
