Grants and Writing Resources for University of Otago

New Zealand had three Rhodes Scholars in 2024, and one came from Otago: a graduate in economics and genetics, finishing a law honours degree, who was bound for an MPhil in Economics at Oxford. On campus that August, the best doctoral talk at Otago's Three Minute Thesis Grand Final came from a candidate in the Higher Education Development Centre, and the best master's talk from a student in Human Nutrition.

Help With Writing

Student Academic Skills offers one-on-one consultations on research skills and thesis writing, a series of Research and Thesis workshops, and online resources. The Graduate Research School adds its own workshops for postgraduates, among them Finishing your PhD and a Writing Habits series. Subject librarians teach postgraduate library workshops too.

Research Funding

Students can try research over the long summer break. Summer Research Scholarships place students on supervised projects between November and February, with a tax-free stipend benchmarked to at least NZ$7,000 for ten weeks; applicants must be returning to study at a New Zealand university the following year.

For doctoral candidates, the University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship has paid NZ$34,128 a year for up to 36 months, plus a tuition fee waiver, though the university says the programme is currently under review. After submission, Postgraduate Publishing Bursaries give doctoral candidates one to three months, and research master's candidates one or two months, of funded time to turn thesis research into papers for peer-reviewed journals or a book chapter. There's no selection round. Every eligible applicant receives one.

Presenting Research

The Three Minute Thesis competition asks doctoral and research master's candidates to explain their work to a general audience in three minutes with a single slide. In 2025 the best doctoral presentation earned a NZ$750 research grant and the best master's presentation NZ$500. Otago's doctoral winner goes on to the online Asia-Pacific 3MT final, and the top two doctoral speakers enter the online Matariki competition.

Where Theses Are Published

PhD and master's students upload their final thesis to OUR Archive, which the library's thesis guide describes as the home of Otago's e-theses.

The Division of Humanities keeps a list of exceptional doctoral theses. A thesis earns a place only when all three examiners agree it is exceptional in research content, originality, expression, and presentation, and among the top 10 percent of theses examined.

Our editors work with Otago writers at the final-draft stage, from seminar papers to dissertations. See our University of Otago dissertation and thesis editing and University of Otago essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
