Grants and Writing Resources for the University of Pittsburgh

Two Pitt juniors were named Goldwater Scholars in March 2026, raising the University's count of Goldwater Scholars to 69, according to Pittwire. One, a biology and Spanish major, studies lipid transport in a School of Medicine lab. The other, a neuroscience major, works on the interactions between glia and neurons in the brain and plans to pursue a PhD in neuroscience.

Fellowships Through the Honors College

Students enrolled in a Frederick Honors College program can apply for the Chancellor's Undergraduate Research Fellowship, which backs a research or creative project with a Pitt-affiliated mentor during the fall or spring. The Research & Creative Fellowship works the same way and adds a weekly one-credit seminar. Both appear on the college's research and creative fellowships page, along with Martinson Applied Projects, where teams take on interdisciplinary applied research led by Pitt researchers.

The Brackenridge Fellowship funds independent summer research or creative work in any major. Separate summer fellowships cover the creative arts and the health sciences. Students presenting at a conference can ask for a Frederick Honors College Travel Award.

Where Student Work Appears

Honors students and fellowship recipients present posters, tables and BPhil oral talks at the Research & Creative Expression Symposium. For print, there is the Pittsburgh Undergraduate Review, a peer-reviewed, student-run research journal sponsored by the Frederick Honors College. Students founded it in 1981 and revived it in 2021. It takes research, creative writing, visual art and reviews, and volunteer peer editors help the Editorial Board carry each piece from first review to final copy.

Dietrich School Fellowships for Doctoral Students

The Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences lists its internal awards on its graduate fellowships page. Each carries a stipend and a tuition scholarship with no duties attached. Continuing Ph.D. students compete for Andrew Mellon Predoctoral Fellowships, which are open to every discipline.

Smaller pools target particular fields. Up to two Lillian B. Lawler Fellowships go each year to advanced students in English, French, Hispanic, History or Slavic. The Carolyn Chambers Memorial Fellowship alternates between History and English. The Leo B. and Teresa Y. Wegemer Endowed STEM Fellowship goes to two full-time Ph.D. students in STEM research, and departments nominate the candidates.

Writing Help and the ETD

The Writing Center gives free consultations to Pitt students, online or in person, on academic, creative and professional writing. Undergraduates work with peer tutors. Graduate students have a separate resources page that lists one-on-one consultations, five-day Project Camps and one-day Project Workshops run with the Writing Institute.

A thesis or dissertation has to meet the ETD Format Guidelines before its author can graduate. The ETD templates come in Word and LaTeX versions, and the University Library System offers workshops and one-on-one formatting help. The library's ETD submission guide covers ProQuest access choices. Finished work is deposited in D-Scholarship@Pitt, where the student's school reviews it before approval.

Before an ETD goes to your school for approval, our editors can give it a final pass for grammar, consistency and format. See our University of Pittsburgh dissertation and thesis editing page, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
