Grants and Writing Resources for University of Saskatchewan
A Bachelor of Arts student finishing double honours in history and in gender, sexuality, and social justice studies was named a Rhodes Scholar in November 2025. She is one of six USask students picked for the Rhodes in four years.
Fellowships and Graduate Awards
The College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (CGPS) administers about $8.21 million in institutional funding for graduate students. Its list runs from the Dean's Scholarship and the Teacher-Scholar Doctoral Fellowship to dozens of donor awards with narrow purposes, among them the Hantelman Humanities Scholarships, the Wanda Young Scholarship in Doctoral Studies and the Borgerson Graduate Scholarship in Public Policy and Sustainability. CGPS also handles the Tri-Agency competitions for Canada Graduate Research Scholarships at the master's and doctoral levels, and doctoral Research Travel Supplements are awarded twice a year. Amounts are posted in the CGPS Awards HUB.
Finished theses compete too. The USask Graduate Thesis/Dissertation Awards are presented at spring convocation, the Governor General's Gold Medal at fall and spring convocation, and CGPS handles nominations for the CAGS/UMI Distinguished Dissertation Award and the WAGS Distinguished Master's Thesis Award.
Presenting Research
Undergraduates present research, scholarly and artistic work at the Student Undergraduate Research Experience symposium. The 2025 SURE symposium, held August 27 in three sessions, gave OVPR Promising Future Scholar Awards of $500, $300 and $200, plus $500 awards for community engagement, storytelling, skills articulation and people's choice.
Thesis-based master's and PhD students can enter 3MT, explaining their research to a general audience in three minutes with one slide. The top ten from a recorded preliminary round reach the in-person finals. First place pays $1,500 and a CGPS-funded trip to the Western Regional competition; second, third and People's Choice pay $750, $500 and $250.
Research Funding for Undergraduates
NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards pay for 16 weeks of research by domestic students in the natural sciences and engineering, who apply together with a supervisor. The research opportunities list from the Office of the Vice-President Research also points to the USask Student Travel Award for conferences and competitions and to college programs such as the WCVM Undergraduate Summer Research and Leadership Program.
Publishing
Students edit USURJ, the University of Saskatchewan Undergraduate Research Journal, which has published peer-reviewed papers and creative work by USask undergraduates since 2013. It's diamond open access, so neither authors nor readers pay. Experts in the relevant field review each paper. The Fall 2026 issue carried papers on dry beans, oat disease, Protestant missionaries in colonial Jamaica and Ocean Vuong's Time Is a Mother.
Graduate theses go into HARVEST, the university's repository for research, scholarship and artistic work, which keeps a collection of electronic theses and dissertations.
Writing Support
The University Library's Writing Centre takes drop-ins in Murray Library, room 142, books in-person and online sessions with tutors, and reviews drafts submitted online with feedback by email. Tutors help with outlining, drafting, revising and academic conventions. They don't proofread.
For graduate students, the library's graduate learning support adds writing workshops, tutor feedback and Writing Retreats for making progress on their work, along with peer-led workshops and help with everything from managing time to preparing for comprehensive or qualifying exams.
Our editors work with USask writers at the final-draft stage, from seminar papers to dissertations. See our University of Saskatchewan dissertation and thesis editing and University of Saskatchewan essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
