Grants and Writing Resources for the University of Texas at Arlington
Students in the College of Business trade a real-money portfolio every day through UTA's Student Managed Investment Fund. In November 2025 UTA reported that the fund took first place in the poster session at the Student Managed Investment Fund Consortium in Chicago, against more than 50 universities. UTA's poster highlighted the portfolio's high Sharpe ratio and low beta.
Paid Research for Undergraduates
The Office of Undergraduate Research in Nedderman Hall 246 meets with students and runs several formal research programs. The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) funds one semester of work in a faculty mentor's research group, or an independent research or creative project under faculty guidance. Any major can apply with full-time status and a 2.75 GPA, and international students are eligible. The Undergraduate Research Assistant Program lets students put federal work-study funds toward part-time research with a UTA faculty mentor.
The Honors College offers Undergraduate Research Fellowships: 25 hours a week of mentored research over the 11-week summer term, in any discipline. Applicants are Honors students with at least 24 credit hours who write a research proposal with a UTA faculty member.
Graduate Grants and Fellowships
Dissertation writers in good standing in the colleges of architecture, planning and public affairs, business, education and liberal arts, and in the School of Social Work, can request a Dissertation Research Enhancement Grant of up to $2,000. It pays for resources the university can't supply: travel to archives, libraries or research sites, consultation with outside experts, short methods courses, participant payments, specialized analyses, and statistical or editorial consultation. Conference travel is excluded, and the grant has to be approved before the work happens. The dissertation supervisor sends a supporting letter.
For Spring 2026 the Graduate School offered $200 to the leader of each funded writing group. Groups of three to five graduate students get priority, as do doctoral students in the final stages, and leaders file a short monthly report. New doctoral students who want to educate and mentor disadvantaged students can apply for the Maverick Bridge Doctoral Fellowship, two years of tuition support and a stipend, summers included. Honors College seniors and recent Honors graduates entering a UTA master's or doctoral program can hold the Bridge to Graduate School Fellowship, $4,000 a semester for up to four semesters, renewed each term with a 3.2 GPA.
Writing Center, Dissertation Help and Outside Editors
The UTA Writing Center books 30- or 60-minute sessions, face to face or online, up to three a week. Its consultants work as coaches through brainstorming, drafting and revision; they point out grammar and sentence problems and show the writer how to fix them. In graduate consultations, held at 411 Central Library, some consultants work only with graduate students, and graduate students can book any consultant, including for theses and dissertations.
The Graduate School's dissertation writing resources include a semester-long Dissertation Fellowship that funds doctoral students to work only on finishing the dissertation, and a two-day Dissertation Lab for common writing roadblocks. The same page addresses outside copy editing. It points students to UT Austin's Writing Center guidance and freelance list and to the Editorial Freelance Association, and it states that those editors are not affiliated with UT Arlington and that listing their contact information is no endorsement.
Finished work goes to UTA Libraries. Students email the thesis team for a submission guide, then upload to MavMatrix, the university's open repository. The Libraries review the formatting and either accept the document or request corrections, and embargoes of 6, 12 or 24 months are available. Each department sets formatting requirements, with the Graduate School's manuals as a starting point.
Editors For Students works with graduate and undergraduate writers on a final edit for grammar, consistency and format.
