Grants and Writing Resources for the University of the Incarnate Word

In June 2026 a second-year student at UIW's School of Osteopathic Medicine received a $1,000 Good Skin Knowledge Community Grant from the American Academy of Dermatology. Working with Healing the Children - Texas, the project brings lessons on common skin conditions and sun protection to underserved students in the Southside Independent School District. UIW also sent its first team to the 2026 HSI Battle of the Brains, a 24-hour competition in which students pitch a business idea built on a problem posed by participating companies, and one team member was selected for scholarships from The Home Depot and Dell Technologies.

The Excellence Summit

The Office of Research and Graduate Studies invites abstracts and artist's statements for the UIW Excellence Summit. It started as a single Research Day in 2008, and the 2026 summit was the nineteenth. The program mixes podium talks and posters with capstone projects, artistic, musical and theatrical performances, and a service-learning showcase open to students, faculty and staff.

Past proceedings are archived in The Athenaeum, the UIW Libraries' open access repository for research and creative work by the university community.

Research Jobs and Travel Money

Graduate Research Assistantships place master's and doctoral students in a mentored research experience and pay in tuition credit: three hours per fall or spring semester, or six hours in a single semester. Students need good academic standing and at least six enrolled hours, though doctoral students writing the dissertation on continuous enrollment can meet that with one hour. The credit can't be combined with other tuition discounts.

The Student Travel Award, listed on the same page, supports Broadway Campus undergraduates and graduate students accepted as the primary presenter at a professional event, whether the work is research, a creative piece or a performance. The faculty mentor files the application. Students in the professional schools are directed to their home campus.

Writing Help

Undergraduates use the Writing and Learning Center in Room 3167 of the Student Engagement Center. Faculty-recommended tutors work on idea development, research, organization and prose, and on reading strategies too. Sessions run in person or on Zoom through the Virtual Tutoring Center.

Graduate and professional students writing theses, dissertations and doctoral projects can book one-on-one consultations with the Graduate Writing Specialist in the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, who gives feedback on drafts to improve formatting, clarity, grammar and style. Classroom presentations on academic writing can be scheduled through a request form.

Theses, Dissertations and Outside Editors

Every student who writes a thesis, doctoral project or dissertation for a degree submits an electronic copy to The Athenaeum, and dissertation writers also deposit through ProQuest. The Thesis and Dissertation Hub points enrolled students to templates and style guidelines on the office's Canvas page. The office's format review leaves content, citations and writing mechanics to students and their committees.

The hub also addresses professional editors. Students are told to discuss hiring one with their mentors, to settle the scope of work and a flexible timeline before making contact, and to give the editor the discipline's most recent formatting guidelines along with UIW's format guides. The student is solely responsible for any contract with an editor, and the office states that its guidance endorses no editor.

If you and your mentors agree that a professional edit makes sense, send us the scope, your timeline and the UIW format guides, and our editors can give the manuscript a final check for grammar, consistency and format.
