Grants and Writing Resources for the University of the Pacific

Students in Arts 77, Pacific's branding and identity systems course, spent a semester building two seasonal campaigns for a coffee shop on Stockton's Miracle Mile. Customers scanned a QR code on their cups to unlock a holiday animation. In June 2026 the project won a Gold Award in Multi-Channel Advertising at the Horizon Interactive Awards, a competition that draws entries from around the world.

Summer Fellowships and the Showcase

A Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) pays a $4,000 stipend, a $750 housing allowance and up to $500 for research supplies. Fellows give 8 to 10 weeks of full-time work to a project with a faculty mentor. At the 2026 Summer Scholars Symposium on Aug. 18, SURF students presented nearly 30 projects, from music therapy to plastic pollutants.

The Office of Undergraduate Research offers grants and conference travel awards, and it backs students who present at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research. In 2024 the Pacific Undergraduate Research and Creativity Conference and Research Day combined into the Research & Creativity Showcase. The April 2026 showcase in the DeRosa University Center covered more than 100 topics in posters and live demonstrations.

National Fellowships

The Pacific Fellowship Office works with students on external awards decided by national competition. Its list runs by class year. First-year students can start with the Critical Language Scholarship or the Gilman, juniors with the Truman and Goldwater, which both need a university nomination, and seniors and recent graduates with the Fulbright and Gates-Cambridge.

Contests and Campus Journals

The University Libraries and the Writing Center hold a Student Writing Contest twice a year for short stories by Pacific students in any major. The 2025 theme was Technological Conflict. The grand winner received $500 on their student account and second place $250. Winning stories are published on Scholarly Commons.

Calliope, the literary and arts magazine of the Pacific Humanities Center, reached Volume 54 in 2025. English and Art and Graphic Design students produce it, and students from every discipline can submit. At the McGeorge School of Law, the student-run McGeorge Law Review comes out quarterly and devotes one issue a year to its Review of Selected California Legislation.

Graduate Research and the Thesis

Pacific offers a limited number of Graduate Teaching Assistantships with tuition support, arranged through each program director. In 2023 the Office of Research and the Library and Learning Center opened a Graduate Video Research Award for short videos on capstones, theses and dissertations, with $1,000, $500 and $250 prizes. The COP Dean's Graduate Travel Award offers two travel stipends to MS or PhD students in Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences who are advised in the Department of Chemistry, for presenting research at national or international conferences.

After the defense, the candidate sends a Word file of the final draft for a format review against the Thesis and Dissertation Format Guide. Depending on the school, the finished work goes to ProQuest or to Scholarly Commons, and it is listed in the University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations collection.

The Writing Center

Undergraduate and graduate writing consultants and professional staff run free sessions in the Writing Center, and appointments usually last 30 to 60 minutes. According to the university catalog, the center sits on the second floor of the William Knox Holt Library and consults face to face, by video and by email on assignments in any discipline.

Before the Word file goes to the library for format review, our editors can give it a final edit for grammar, citation consistency and typos. See our University of the Pacific dissertation and thesis editing page, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
