Grants and Writing Resources for the University of Toledo
A UToledo biochemistry student who has worked on synthesizing potential opioid antagonists and agonists in a faculty mentor's lab won a Goldwater Scholarship in April 2026. The foundation gave 454 awards for 2026–27, chosen from more than 5,000 sophomores and juniors. Two months earlier, sales students from the Edward H. Schmidt School of Professional Sales took first place overall at the 11th annual UToledo Invitational Sales Competition, against 36 other universities and colleges and a record field of 145 students.
Stipends for Undergraduate Research
The Office of Undergraduate Research helps students find research opportunities and funds research and creative work. Its funding programs start with the Summer Research and Creative Activities Program, open to undergraduates in any research or creative area, with stipends that are typically $3,000. First-year students have a parallel summer program. During the school year, the Academic Year Research Program funds a small number of students, typically at $1,500 a semester, for students who can't apply for summer funding.
Summer researchers report out at the End-of-Summer Research Symposium. At the close of fall semester the office and Carlson Library co-host the Undergraduate Research Exhibition, which used to be called the Scholars Celebration.
Scholarships for English Students
The English department lists its scholarships and awards in one place. The Jeanette Nuneviller Brand Memorial Scholarship makes several awards of up to $4,000 each, with preference for majors interested in teaching, writing, the teaching of writing or drama. The Shapiro Scholarship also gives up to $4,000 to majors with at least a 3.0 GPA. For the single $1,000 Conrad Scholarship, applicants write an essay of 500 words or fewer on their goals as English majors and the place of the humanities. Majors presenting at refereed scholarly conferences can ask the department for travel funding.
Graduate students in English or Education can apply for the Helen M. Fields Memorial Achievement Award, which the College of Graduate Studies lists among its scholarships at typically $1,500 to $2,500.
Graduate Funding and Research Talks
University Fellowships go to new full-time doctoral students with exceptional records. Each department sets the stipend, and the fellowship waives the out-of-state surcharge and most fees. Fellows with an outstanding record and significant progress can renew it for up to three more years, for four years of support in all. Students researching a thesis, project or dissertation can apply for the Robert N. Whiteford Memorial Scholarship, typically $500 to $600, to put toward that research and professional development.
For research costs, the Graduate Research Awards in the 2025-26 cycle paid up to $2,000, or up to $2,200 for active members of the Graduate Student Association and its college representatives. The money buys printing, transcription, survey software, participant incentives and lab or recording equipment. The Graduate Student Affairs Committee of the Graduate Council picks the winners, one proposal per student each year. Members of the Graduate Student Association can also apply for reimbursement of research travel and conference registration.
The GSA runs the Midwest Graduate Research Symposium every year. The 2026 program at Memorial Field House had 10-minute seminar talks, 5-minute lightning talks and a poster session, all scored by judges, with an awards ceremony to close. Students past their qualifying exams can enter the Three-Minute Thesis competition. Eight advance from the qualifying round to the final, where judges name a First Place winner, a Runner-Up and an Honorable Mention, the audience picks a People's Choice winner, and every winner receives a cash prize.
The Writing Center and Thesis Submission
The Writing Center works with student writers in all disciplines from Carlson Library, inside the Learning Enhancement Center. A 50-minute session suits research papers, group projects and senior theses. A 25-minute session handles shorter assignments, brainstorming and MLA or APA citation. Writers bring the assignment sheet, a draft and their goals for the session.
Theses and dissertations follow the College of Graduate Studies' ETD process. Format review is optional and strongly encouraged. Reviewers check the formatting against a checklist covering pagination, margins and required sections. The college supplies Word templates in Default, APA and Humanities styles, a UThesis LaTeX template on Overleaf, and drop-in hours on Microsoft Teams. Its Formatting Manual holds the student responsible for a document free of spelling errors and written in good English grammar, and the college will not proofread for either. The final accessible PDF goes to the OhioLINK ETD Center, and every OhioLINK ETD is passed to ProQuest.
UToledo's Formatting Manual makes grammar and spelling the student's responsibility, and our editors can give a thesis, dissertation or course paper a final edit for grammar, consistency and format before it goes to format review.
