Grants and Writing Resources for University of Victoria
A microbiology graduate was named the 2025 Rhodes Scholar for British Columbia in December 2024, one of 11 Canadians chosen. That made 13 Rhodes Scholars for UVic. In June 2026, UVic News profiled a philosophy PhD who received the Governor General's Gold Medal for the most outstanding doctoral thesis.
Research Awards and Internships
The Jamie Cassels Undergraduate Research Awards support third- and fourth-year students doing original research with a faculty supervisor. Successful applicants receive $1,500 toward their studies, according to UVic's student research opportunities page. First-year students can start with the Valerie Kuehne Undergraduate Research Awards, listed alongside JCURA on the student awards page.
Graduate students have a credit option. GS 505, the Multi-Disciplinary Research Internship described on the student research opportunities page, pairs master's and PhD students with community mentors on research that meets social needs.
Student Journals
UVic keeps a list of its undergraduate journals in one place. The Albatross, UVic's undergraduate journal of literary criticism and cultural studies, published Vol. 16 in June 2026 with ten student articles. Other titles on the list include Sophia for undergraduate philosophy, The Ascendant Historian, On Politics, Constelaciones for Hispanic and Italian studies, and Appeal, a student-run law review.
For finished work, UVicSpace is the university's open-access repository for scholarship by faculty and students.
Graduate Funding and Travel
Applicants to most graduate programs are considered automatically for UVic fellowships of up to $20,000 a year. Academic units set the value of UVic's internal awards and fellowships, which you can search from the Faculty of Graduate Studies' graduate student funding page. For conferences, workshops and research trips, the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) and the GSS offer travel awards of up to $600 outside BC, $400 within BC, and $200 on Vancouver Island.
Writing Support
The Academic Skills Centre offers free one-on-one tutorials and workshops on writing and study strategies, online or in person at the Mearns Centre for Learning – McPherson Library. You can book ahead or drop in. Graduate students also get the Graduate Writing Room, a term-long space to write beside peers with an advisor on hand and no registration needed, along with a Thesis & Dissertation Writers Retreat.
