Grants and Writing Resources for The University of Western Australia

UWA has supplied every Western Australian Rhodes Scholar since 2019, through the 2025 award, according to the University's full list of Western Australian Rhodes Scholars. The last break in that run came in 2018, when the list credits the scholarship to Curtin University.

Travel Grants for Research Students

The Convocation of UWA Graduates funds the Convocation Postgraduate Research Travel Awards, open to all postgraduate research students who have submitted a research plan. Recipients can claim up to $3,000 toward research travel in Australia or overseas, reimbursed against original receipts. The travel has to happen at least six months before the thesis goes in. Several of the awards carry names, among them the Geoffrey Kennedy, Sue Baker and Barry Marshall and Robin Warren Convocation PGRTAs, and some are Postgraduate Students' Association awards.

Scholarships and Prizes

Research degrees come with stipends. The 2027 International RTP Stipend and Tuition Fee Scholarships pay AUD $39,253.30 a year, for up to two years in a Master's by Research or three and a half years in a doctorate, and an application puts the candidate in the running for every other scholarship in the round.

Undergraduates are recognized at the end of the degree. Convocation awards undergraduate prizes in the Bachelor of Arts, Biomedical Science, Commerce and Science, plus an Indigenous Undergraduate Prize, to final-year students with the highest weighted average mark across both semesters.

Getting Writing Help

Writing support sits with the Academic Skills Centre on Level 1 of Reid Library. Its Academic Skills Advisers work on writing, English language and research skills, as well as study technique, maths and statistics. Students can book a one-to-one appointment, come to a drop-in session at the library on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings, or register for online workshops.

Honours students drafting a thesis can get free advice from the Centre. That covers one-to-one advice, workshops and digital resources.

Where Theses Are Published

Most UWA theses completed after 2003 are digital and held in the UWA Profiles and Research Repository, which takes PhD theses and those from some Master's by Research programs and makes them accessible where possible. Older theses are mostly in print. The Library has digitised about 300 of them, and those are in the Repository too.
