Grants and Writing Resources for the University of Wyoming

Twenty second-year students in UW's WWAMI Medical Education Program presented their summer research at the program's seventh annual research symposium, reported by UW in November 2025. Their posters covered HPV vaccination rates in Thayne, fluoride varnish for children in Sheridan, pediatric diabetes care in Fremont County and childhood malnutrition in Kenya's Nakuru County. The Wyoming Chapter of the American College of Physicians gave four awards. One was a new Wyoming Health Impact Award, which went to the Thayne vaccination study, built on four weeks at Star Valley Health.

Undergraduate Research Day

By 2024, UW had held Undergraduate Research and Inquiry Day for more than 25 years. UW's announcement of the April 2024 edition expected hundreds of students from UW and Wyoming community colleges. Morning talks were planned at about ten minutes each, with five minutes for questions, and posters were set for the Wyoming Union in the afternoon. Subjects ranged from agriculture and engineering to the arts and humanities.

Phi Beta Kappa planned two awards for the 2024 event. One recognized excellence in nonvocational, nonprofessional or nontechnical study; the other went to work on the interfaces between science and the human condition. In 2024 the Undergraduate Research Office took questions at uroffice@uwyo.edu.

Funding for Theses and Graduate Research

The School of Graduate Education lists graduate funding on a financial assistance page. The award aimed at writers is the Carlton R. Barkhurst Writing Fellowship, which helps master's and PhD candidates finish a thesis or dissertation on time. McNair Graduate Scholars awards for new graduate students entering in fall 2025 went to former McNair Scholars, with departments making the nominations. Geology and geophysics fellowships pay MS and PhD students stipends of $500 to $6,000.

The same page points to national fellowships, among them the Morris K. Udall and John S. McCain III Native American Graduate Fellowship in Tribal Policy for Native American and Alaska Native students in health-related degrees, and the DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship for PhD students whose fields use high-performance computing. A free database on the page lists 625 scholarships, grants and fellowships for graduate students and postdocs.

A Literary Journal and Thesis Submission

The Owen Wister Review is UW's literature and arts journal, named for the author of The Virginian. It publishes submissions from the public.

After a defense, graduate students collect committee signatures, and a chair may hold a signature until required changes are approved. The Report of Final Examination Results then goes to the Office of the Registrar, and the student uploads the thesis or dissertation to ProQuest for format review and electronic publication. Students are told if more corrections are needed. PhD students also complete the Survey of Earned Doctorates.

If a UW thesis, dissertation or course paper needs one more careful pass for grammar, consistency and format before the Registrar's review or a professor's deadline, our editors can give it that final edit.
