Grants and Writing Resources for Uppsala University
In September 2026 Uppsala named its Student of the Year: a student who entered the newly launched engineering programme in industrial engineering and management (civilingenjörsprogrammet i industriell ekonomi) in 2020, while teaching was largely remote, and later co-founded the UU AI Society to connect students with companies through hackathons and workshops. As a student representative on the programme council he also pressed for more data and AI in the curriculum. The award comes from the Anders Wall Foundation, which has given it every year since 2000, and carries a scholarship of SEK 150,000.
Scholarships and Travel Grants
Uppsala's scholarships come from foundations affiliated with the university, which together offer over 500 scholarships and distributed SEK 79.5 million in 2025. Each donor sets the conditions, so eligibility can turn on a student's faculty or nation, subject, home region or plans to study abroad. Applications go through the university's online scholarship system.
The travel scholarships pay for study trips, research trips and study abroad, covering round-trip travel, accommodation, visas, vaccinations, per diems and conference fees. Applicants attach a travel plan and a cost estimate. Students heading abroad for thesis fieldwork can also apply for Minor Field Studies, a Sida-funded grant of SEK 25,000 for bachelor's, master's and advanced-level thesis work in any discipline, with a stay of six to twenty weeks.
The Language Workshop
The Language Workshop gives free tutorials and lectures on academic writing and oral presentation, in English and Swedish, to every Uppsala student and PhD student, at the English Park Campus in Uppsala and at the Almedal Library on Campus Gotland. A tutorial runs up to an hour, on campus or online. Tutors work on getting started, structure, formality, clarity, sentence structure and grammar, and they'll also coach a student through a presentation.
Staff can book the Workshop's lectures and workshops for groups of PhD students. Students with reading and writing disabilities are eligible for extra support, and drop-in focused reading sessions, open to all students and staff, are held at Campus Engelska parken.
Publishing
Student theses and degree projects can be published in full text in DiVA, the university's publishing system, when the student's department uses it; the department's thesis administrator approves each one. Doctoral candidates work with the library's Thesis Production service on cover design, print files, printer bookings and archiving in DiVA, where long-term digital archiving is mandatory for every doctoral thesis in the humanities and social sciences. Under the library's publishing agreements, corresponding authors affiliated with Uppsala can publish open access in many journals without paying article processing charges, or at a discount.
