Grants and Writing Resources for West Texas A&M University

At the 2026 Texas Intercollegiate Press Association convention, held in Denton in March, a WT junior took second place in radio announcing and third in print news editing. Both were live competitions held during the convention.

Research Grants for Students

The Killgore Research Committee runs two grant programs for students, and both are open to every discipline. The President's Undergraduate Student Research Grant generally pays $3,500 or less. Applicants must be in good standing and need a WT faculty adviser, and students working toward a second bachelor's degree may apply.

The Graduate Student Research Grant is limited to $4,000. The committee funds work aimed at publication, performance or exhibition in the student's field, and the money may go toward thesis or dissertation research.

Where Student Work Appears

Cornette Library organizes the Faculty and Student Research Poster Session and Research Fair with staff from the Graduate School and Research. Students and faculty bring current research to an informal setting, and Killgore Grant recipients use it to share results with the campus.

The Legacy is WT's creative writing journal. It prints student fiction, poetry, drama and creative nonfiction four times a year, accepts work in English or Spanish, and began in 1990 as The Ink Blot. Student journalists also compete at TIPA, where the 1910 PR staff placed third in social media general coverage at the 2026 convention.

Graduate Funding

Colleges and departments award graduate assistantships in research, teaching and nonteaching roles. Assistants generally work about 20 hours a week at pay set by disciplinary rates, and a grant or department fund may also cover tuition and fees when approved.

The Graduate School's scholarships go to degree-seeking students registered for at least six graduate hours with a 3.0 graduate GPA. Most of these funds are need-based, so the FAFSA is part of the application.

Help With Writing and Theses

The Writing Center in CC107 of the Student Success Center takes walk-ins and Zoom appointments, and any WT student can send a paper through its online form. Consultants work on brainstorming, outlining, organization, formatting and proofreading. They also bring grammar workshops to classes and clubs.

The Graduate School's Thesis Guide makes the student alone responsible for the mechanical correctness of each draft and for final proofreading, and it names the Writing Center as a source of help for thesis students. The Dissertation Guide sets the same rule and describes the dissertation as an independent professional effort finished under faculty supervision.

After committee approval, students upload a PDF through Vireo, and the Graduate School reviews each manuscript before accepting it. Approved work goes into the WTAMU Repository, and the library's theses guide shows how to search WT theses and dissertations.

Final proofreading of a WT thesis or dissertation rests with the student, and our editors can give the manuscript a careful pass for grammar, consistency and format before it goes to the committee for final approval.
