Grants and Writing Resources for Whitworth University
Whitworth hosted the National Christian College Forensics Association tournament on March 27-29, 2026, with nearly 140 students on 14 teams from 13 states, and the Arguing Bucs won the national title at home. They placed first in debate and second in speech for first in combined sweepstakes, and a senior finished as the top competitor overall. In May a peace studies major in the class of 2027 was named a finalist for the Critical Language Scholarship in Swahili, one of fewer than 30 students in the country picked for that program.
Summer Research and SIRC
Summer STEM Research puts students on faculty projects in chemistry, psychology, biology, mathematics and computer science, and engineering and physics. The 2026 openings ran from rhenium complexes for bioimaging to quantum computing for neural networks. A molecular shape project shared by mathematics and chemistry faculty is funded by the National Science Foundation. Requirements vary by project: one asks for Python skills, another for organic chemistry coursework.
Whitworth and Gonzaga University co-organize the Spokane Intercollegiate Research Conference and take turns as host each spring. Whitworth held the 23rd conference in 2026. Advanced high school, community college, undergraduate and graduate students give oral, poster or creative presentations, and there is no charge to take part.
Fellowships and Graduate Awards
Each award on the fellowships and scholarships page has a named faculty sponsor. One faculty member handles Fulbright and NSEP Boren applications. Another sponsors the Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell and Gates Cambridge scholarships, plus the Schwarzman Scholars Program and the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, and a third oversees the Lilly Graduate Fellows Program. The page sends applicants to the Composition Commons for writing support and to career services to prepare for interviews.
Graduate students win national money too. In May 2026 a Master of Science in Financial Planning student received a $5,000 Charles Schwab Foundation CFP Certification Scholarship, one of 16 given nationally. Applicants to the Doctor of Occupational Therapy program are considered for scholarships automatically when they apply.
Where Student Writing Appears
The English department lists two literary journals. Script is student-run and showcases creative writing by Whitworth students. Rock & Sling, Whitworth's literary journal, publishes writers from around the world and gives students the kind of editing and publishing work usually reserved for graduate students.
In the honors program, George Whitworth Scholars plan and defend a capstone tied to their discipline, and the program lists chances to co-author research with professors. It links a set of selected honors projects in Whitworth Digital Commons.
Writing Help and Graduate Projects
The Composition Commons is in Room 242 of the Harriet Cheney Cowles Memorial Library and is open to anyone affiliated with Whitworth. Writers meet a student consultant alone or in small groups at any step of a paper. Sessions run online, with a limited number in person, and the consultants come from many departments.
Graduate writing takes several forms. The low-residency MFA in Creative Writing pairs each student one-on-one with a published writer in the same genre and ends in a book-length creative thesis, with a 20-page critical essay alongside it. OTD students plan a doctoral capstone with a faculty advisor and a community mentor, and Digital Commons keeps a DCE Dissemination of Scholarly Works collection for the program. Theology theses from 2014 to 2025 are collected in Theology Projects & Theses.
A Fulbright statement on its way to a faculty sponsor, or a capstone paper bound for Digital Commons, should be clean on grammar, consistency and format, and our editors handle that final edit.
