Grants and Writing Resources for Wilkes University
In June 2026 Wilkes reported that a pharmacy student had received the Outstanding Adult Learner Award from the Luzerne County Council on Adult Higher Education. She was set to begin her third professional year at the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy that fall, more than ten years after she started her prerequisite courses.
Money for Research With a Mentor
The university's Mentoring Committee funds student research done with faculty mentors. Its Mentoring Committee travel grants give up to $1,000 to a student presenting work done with a faculty mentor at a conference, and up to $400 to a student attending a conference with a faculty member. No student receives more than $1,000 in one academic year. Students write their applications, one per person even when a group travels together, and presenters file a short report before they are reimbursed.
The same committee funds noncredit summer research, scholarly and creative projects supervised by faculty. Under the guidelines for summer 2026 proposals, maximum student support was $3,000 for up to 12 weeks, with up to $500 for supplies. These grants can't pay for research taken for course credit or stand in for a capstone or thesis, and undergraduates get priority. The Research at Wilkes page adds that summer researchers receive a full research salary and free campus housing, and they can co-author publications with faculty.
Honors Program Support
Members of the Wilkes Honors Program receive a $1,000 on-campus housing grant for all four years and a $500 educational stipend in the first year. The program also offers grant funding for study abroad, research, internships and conference attendance, and it encourages independent research and creative performance.
Where Student Writing Appears
Manuscript has been published continuously since 1947. A student editorial staff now puts out one free issue a year of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, visual art and music compositions. Wilkes students, faculty, staff and alumni may submit up to five pieces per genre, with no more than five pages in total, from a wilkes.edu address. Any student can join the editorial board, which critiques, workshops, copyedits and lays out the magazine.
Graduate writers study in the Maslow Family Graduate Program in Creative Writing, a low-residency MA and MFA with two campus residencies a year. Each creative thesis is read by a working agent, editor, publisher or producer, who writes notes that the student goes over in a one-on-one meeting at residency. The program's scholarships take $1,000 to $5,000 off tuition. Faculty nominate current students for the Beverly Hiscox, Norris Church Mailer and Jennifer Diskin scholarships, and the Henry Borgsmiller Scholarship goes to a student in the final MA or MFA semester. Graduate assistantships with publishers, university departments and the Creative Writing Office carry tuition remission of three to nine credits a term.
Writing Help, Editors and Doctoral Work
The Writing Center is in the Alden Learning Commons of the Eugene S. Farley Library. Undergraduate peer consultants and a graduate assistant work with undergraduate and graduate students in every discipline, by drop-in or appointment, and a paper can be submitted online for feedback at any time. The center does not offer a copy-editing or singular proofreading service. Consultants will answer specific questions about grammar, mechanics and citation.
Nursing has a written rule on outside editors. The Writing Center notes that Farley Library keeps a list of fee-based proofreading and editing services approved by the Passan School of Nursing for nursing students, and the 2026-2027 graduate nursing handbook says graduate faculty may require a DNP student to seek an editor when the student's scholarly writing needs further development. In education, every student in the EdD in Educational Leadership writes a culminating dissertation, which accounts for 9 of the program's 54 post-master's credits. Full-time graduate students can apply for graduate assistantships in academic units of the university, with a 3.0 undergraduate GPA, two letters of recommendation and an interview.
Nursing students looking for an editor should start with the Passan School of Nursing's approved list and their faculty. For other theses, dissertations and papers, our editors can check grammar, consistency and format before submission. See our Wilkes University dissertation and thesis editing and Wilkes University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
