Grants and Writing Resources for Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary
Southeastern's 75th-anniversary history has two Ph.D. students among its coauthors. One in Historical Theology and one in Old Testament started as research assistants to the book's late lead author and became his coauthors on Building a Great Commission Seminary: Different by Design, published in November 2025. One of them also received a grant for archival work at Wake Forest University.
Writing Prizes and Student Awards
Southeastern gives a long slate of named student awards, and its award winners list shows several that turn on written work. The S. L. Stealey Church History Award goes to the best church history term paper of the year. The Arthur F. & Olga M. Robinson Advanced Language Prize is open to M.A., M.Div., and Th.M. students who have finished advanced Hebrew and Greek. Other awards recognize work in Old and New Testament, Christian ethics, philosophy of religion, and preaching.
Presenting and Hearing Research
Ph.D. students engage scholarship from outside their own specialization in two Integrative Colloquium courses in the Southeastern Ph.D. Southeastern's Further Academic Enrichment page adds coffee talks with visiting scholars and library talks open to all students. The Southeastern Ph.D. ends in a dissertation defended before an outside reader from the student's field.
The Master of Theology has thesis and non-thesis tracks and offers advanced, guided research under a faculty supervisor.
Publishing
The Southeastern Theological Review is the faculty journal, published twice a year. It accepts outside submissions of 5,000 to 10,000 words in SBL style, all sent through double-blind review. The journal page doesn't say whether students may submit, so ask the editor before you send one.
Writing and Research Support
The Writing Center offers writing resources and appointments with writing consultants through Southeastern's learning site, which needs a student login. The seminary's Students page lists it, and the Student Support office can point you to the right department.
The Library at Southeastern books research appointments online or in person and keeps research guides. Doctoral students can apply for an assigned study carrel through library Services. To read earlier Southeastern dissertations, the library's Archives page links a ProQuest Dissertations search.
