Grants and Writing Resources for Tsinghua University
Tsinghua students won the 19th Challenge Cup, China's national student competition for extracurricular academic and science work, in November 2025. It was the university's eighth title, the most in the contest's history, and its teams took five special prizes and one first prize in the main competition. Doctoral students keep a long series of their own going. The Department of Chemical Engineering's June 2025 forum was the 801st Tsinghua PhD Academic Forum.
Presenting Research
The Tsinghua PhD Academic Forum (博士生学术论坛) series runs across departments. The 801st forum was co-hosted by the Graduate School, the Party Committee's Graduate Work Office, the Graduate Student Association and the Department of Chemical Engineering. The 2025 Chemical Engineering forum ran five parallel oral sessions, an English poster forum and a satellite forum, and it drew students from nine universities, Peking and Zhejiang among them. Undergraduates start earlier. Through Student Research Training (SRT), a program Tsinghua launched in 1996, student teams work on faculty-guided research projects outside the classroom.
Graduate Funding and Honors
The Graduate School's Doctoral Student Training Fund (博士生培养基金) has three parts. One helps PhD students give an oral or poster presentation at a listed high-level international conference, generally once per degree. A second pays living costs during a 3-to-6-month research stay at a leading overseas university or international organization, and a third supports publication of university-level outstanding doctoral dissertations.
At its June 2026 plenary meeting, the Degree Evaluation Committee approved a proposed list of outstanding graduate theses and practical achievements. The Graduate School's academic honors page also lists the Chorafas Young Researcher Award, which one or two Tsinghua doctoral graduates have won each year since the university became a Chorafas Foundation partner in 2011.
Help With Writing
All first-year undergraduates take Writing and Communication (写作与沟通), a compulsory general-education course launched in 2018 and taught in small thematic classes; more than 12,000 students had completed it by mid-2023. In January 2026 the director of the Writing and Communication Teaching Center reported on the course to Tsinghua's General Education Committee. For one-on-one help, the Student Learning and Development Center's Chinese Writing Tutoring (写作助理) program offers free one-on-one help from graduate students and senior undergraduates, in 50-minute walk-in slots or by advance booking, on essays, papers, coursework, presentations and application documents.
Where Theses Are Published
The Tsinghua University Institutional Repository collects and preserves the university's academic papers, dissertations, books and patents. Readers outside Tsinghua have a second route. The Library's open resource service platform, launched in 2022, gathers open-access papers from Tsinghua and other universities and opens them to the public.
