Grants and Writing Resources for Universiti Sains Malaysia

A PhD candidate in chemistry education from USM's School of Educational Studies took first place at the 2025 3MT National Level Competition, held at Universiti Putra Malaysia in June 2025. The win earned a place representing Malaysia at the Asia-Pacific 3MT Competition.

Funding for Postgraduates

The Institute of Postgraduate Studies (IPS) lists three schemes on its Financial Assistances page: the Postgraduate Conference Fund, the USMCare Scholarship and the Graduate Horizon Scholarship. The page gives an IPS officer to contact for each. The page marks all three as closed for now, so ask there about eligibility, amounts and when they reopen.

Finishing on schedule is recognised too. Under IPS's Graduation on Time scheme, PhD research-mode students who graduate within 42 months of registration receive a certificate, and IPS identifies eligible students without an application.

Help With Research Writing

The library's free Library Consultation Service gives students, faculty and staff a 30- to 60-minute appointment with a librarian. Topics include search strategy, citation and referencing, thesis formatting, publishing strategy and open access.

For postgraduates the library also offers research guides, workshops and events. Its workshop calendar runs monthly sessions on topics such as publishing, referencing, literature searching and Microsoft Word for thesis writing.

Where Theses Are Kept

USM theses are held in the library's Repository@USM service. Full theses sit in the Closed Access Repository@USM, which USM users open by logging in with a USM email account. The Open Access Repository@USM carries thesis abstracts alongside open access journal articles, books and research reports.

For a final edit before submission, our PhD-level editors work with USM students at every level. See our Universiti Sains Malaysia dissertation and thesis editing and Universiti Sains Malaysia essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
