Grants and Writing Resources for University of the Philippines

In October 2026 the Ethics Bowl Varsity Team of UP Diliman's Department of Philosophy became the first Philippine team to compete in the Ethics Olympiad, and one of its two squads took the silver medal. The other earned an honorable mention. The competition regularly draws teams from Australia, the United States, Singapore, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Ten students competed, with three reserves and a 14-member research team behind them.

Money for Theses and Research

UP Diliman's Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts gives the UP Diliman Creative/Critical Thesis Grant in the Arts, Culture, and the Humanities to undergraduate and graduate students in arts and culture programs. It's a competitive outright grant for research or creative work on a thesis, dissertation or capstone project. Undergraduates receive PhP 50,000, master's students PhP 75,000 and doctoral students PhP 100,000.

Colleges run their own grants too. The UP Diliman College of Education's Thesis and Dissertation Grant is open to MAEd and PhDEd students who have defended their thesis or dissertation outline, hold a GWA of 1.75 or better and have been in their program no more than eight years. At UP Manila, the National Institutes of Health funds the NIH Student Research Grant for undergraduate and graduate students, medical students included, at up to PHP 100,000 per project for operating expenses.

Student Journals and Publishing

The Philippine Law Journal, founded in 1914, is edited by a student board drawn from the sophomore, junior and senior classes of the UP College of Law. Seats go to students who qualify in the legal writing and editing exams, held most recently for Volume 100 in 2026-2027.

Students at UP Diliman who publish in one of the campus's own journals can apply for the Student Publication Award, one of the Research Dissemination Office's grants listed on the UP Diliman research funding page.

Where Theses Are Published

UP Diliman's institutional repository is Digital Archives @ UP Diliman, and graduating students of degree-granting units are required to deposit the final, approved and signed copy of the thesis or dissertation there. Full text is open to members of the UP community, on campus through DilNet and off campus with a DilNet login. Authors with patentable, confidential or soon-to-be-published work can request an embargo of one year, renewable annually, during which only the metadata appears.

The University Library's guide to accessing UP electronic theses and dissertations shows how to browse the collection by college and how to sign in with a UPD Webmail account for full access.

When a paper, thesis, or dissertation is ready for a final edit, our editors can help. See our University of the Philippines dissertation and thesis editing page, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
